A little background:
I have been married to the same, wonderful woman for nearly sixteen years. She has known about my obsession with steel objects for all of them. She even bought me my first Spyderco for our second or third anniversary. However, since then, she has showed little interest in the finer aspects of cutting tools. She even has resorted to making jokes with me as the butt, and had no shortage of fun at my expense when I made sure she had a nice "survival backpack" when she went on a winter road-trip with her sister through the mountains.
Saturday, however, she surprised me.
She has always had, on her keyring, a cheap, low-quality pair of nail-clippers that had a chrome-plated knife blade that folded into it. I kept it sharp for her, but never saw her use it. Well, in the course of the kids "borrowing" it, it is now missing.
During our outdoor activities afforded by the beautiful weather we had over the weekend, she noticed the ever-present SAK Classic on my key-ring, and mentioned "I would like to have one of those." Now, she has borrowed it on several occasions, and knew how fine an edge it carried, and the usefulness of the scissors, and realized how much she needed a knife for day-to-day uses, now that her cheapo was missing. I pulled it off my key-ring right there and handed it to her, with the observation that I thought she looked down on my hobby. She replied "I know I tease you a bit, but they really are useful."
Of course, she almost ruined it by adding "Besides, it's cute."
Doesn't matter.
I love that woman.
