Is there an FAQ re basic knife handling safety? I'd like to get it and share it with some folks. Thanks.

The Boy Scouts have one. You can read it in a BSA manual. If I recall, it's basically:

cut away from yourself and others,
close a knife with 2 hands,
hand a knife to someone closed (or butt-first for fixed-blade),
don't carry an open knife,
and then the maintenance stuff like keeping it clean, sharp and oiled.

These days, you might have to add "following carry laws", especially at school; don't use your knife to perform a carjacking, etc.

Oh yeah, I'd also add, "don't test sharpness by running your thumb along the blade in a slicing motion" This gets the novice every time.

Anybody else have any to add?

Yeah! What Daniel said.. no shaving your legs in the shower with your knife.... ummm sorry Daniel...it slipped out... :D

One rule that should be in that FAQ should be:
be very careful who you hand over your knife to - is the person competent enough to open and close it without applying force that can wreck your $100+ folder? Will a short tutorial be enough?

I have handed over several folders to people, and the most common ones are liner locks, which tend to confuse non-knife people. I am always very nervous about the person dropping it, cutting himself or abusing it by applying too much pressure on it.

On the other hand, it's fun to read threads about knife-people that have cut themselves in a matter of minutes after receiving their new knife! :D
