Under the FAQ Rules and other Misc. info section it states Bladeforums isn't owned by a knife dealer. It also states "We don't sell knives". I received an e-mail from Bladeforums about a going out of business sale on knives from Mike Turber. His signature also says he owns Bladeforums. See my first sentence. Mike also published his first "I'm going out of business/sale" post in the general forum, also against the policies if I read them correctly. I know other posts have been moved/locked for doing this on the general forum. I guess the policies are for everyone except?

Well YAH!
he is what we call an OWNER. the rules don't apply to them.

when you start a forum that gets 4700+ users on it, you can make and break your own rules.

marklee, onocide:

I think you've missed a basic distinction. That being the difference between a wholesaler and a retailer. Mike was a wholesale distributor that has now shut his doors and as a "one time good deal" made his stock available to forumites as well as dealers.

It never fails to amaze me that folks with access to sites like this seem determined to find something to complain about. This is not a personal attack at all, just an observation about what I've seen here since the site's inception. Oh well

Hummm... OK I understand Marklee and I agree, to some extent.

First the sale is not a BladeForums sale. I shut down one of my businesses and I allowed dealers to purchase these items, first, over the past year. This is the remaining stock and I thought I was doing the members a favor by letting you guys in on an incredible deal.

I have allowed several dealers to post BFC only specials and giveaways in this forum and will continue to do so.

Yes I own BladeForums, which costs me about $1,500 a month in direct expenses not including Spark's or my time. If I broke one of my own rules then I am sorry but I do not see it that way.

Heck I may just go in and rewrite the entire rule book. Hummmmmm.......

Anyway I guess the point here is, and what most members will most likely say, is that I find it amusing that I get the word out on one hell of an incredible deal for members and someone complains? No big deal as I can be called to the floor too.

Looks like it is time to take a look at BFC real hard and see what we can do to make this site work even better.

Technically you are correct, but then I've always lived by the rule that "rules are made to be broken". In any case like this, I look at the intent of the "rule breaker", if you will. Was the breaking of the rule mean spirited, did it cause financial or physical harm to another, and was the result beneficial to others? I think the answers to these questions would determine whether this is a cause worth arguing.

And, like Unocide saying, he is the boss. Nobody ever said the world was fair, but Mike's deals sure were!

Thanks for the forum Mike!

Who cares! Mike is selling his inventory to any of us at darn near wholesale! Don't we all like cheap knives?

look at history, it's good to be the king. (most of the time... certainly not during a rebelion, BUT USUALLY.)

-I think the sale is great and I'm happy to know about it. That's all, I have no problem with someone using his status as "being the king" to help spread news, and in the process, get rid of all the knives he got, so he can focus on his web site, which I use all the time!

btw, I'm always joking around.

I find it amazing that people can be upset about this. Mike gave us all an opportunity to get knives that were better deals than anywhere else. If you don't like that don't buy any. However, if you think about it, Mike didn't get anything for free here he pays for the site, in this sense he bought ad space just like (I think) the banners that come up at the top of each page. Lets not complain when someone is trying to do you and me a favor.
Just my opinion.
Mike, Thanks for the heads up on the sale, I was happy to hear about it

I tend to be a real black or white, right or wrong kind of guy. Somtimes that causes me to overlook good things. Obviously this sale is good for those in the market for the knives being sold. I guess I was looking at this from the perspective of some of those who have been nailed by both the mgmt here and other forumites for breaking the rules. Yes, Mr. Turber is the owner, and if we want to play in his sand box then he gets to make the rules and we are expected to abide by them. I shouldn't have posted anthing, it just kind of struck me as a bit of an unfair situation. I should give myself the speech I give my kids "Life ain't always fair....". I gave up on Bladeforums a while back, I come here every so often to see what's up, and I guess this proves once again it isn't the place for me.

Marklee, please don't give up on Blade Forums. It really is a fun place to be and to learn and share our passions. I am one who thinks that very little in life is Black and white or Right and Wrong. Everything is always just a little fuzzy and out of focus.

True, some quick action has been taken about some advertising posts, but usually only by Moving the thread to a more appropriate forum in this site. Rules are guidlines for behavior and appropriate content. Clearly you feel Mike broke his own rules. So what? It does not damage anyone, and plenty of folks were glad for the information. Lots of other posters here and there skate a fine line between personal advertsiements or promotion of others. Most of the time this has No consequences. It is tolerated or ignored. Only in a few cases have I seen any action taken. And that was after a recurring pattern of 'rule breaking' became apparent.

It is also true that Mr. Turber makes the rules. It's his site. And his money that suppports it. I don't think what he did was very much different from other threads I've seen.

I really hope this doesn't make you stop reading and participating at BF. Plenty of people, thoughts, and ideas offend me here Everytime I check in. But I keep coming back.

Hey marklee-

Sounds like an anti-quasi-democracy anti-authority kind of thing, I can respect that. I have my streak...

I guess, choose your battles is all I could say. This place is just for fun anyway, ain't it?

A lot of good information, finding what you want (and didn't even know you wanted), and some people have even met some friends here from what I've read.

I didn't buy a knife in the sale (no money

) but I will admit I would've (might still?). I like being able to read, learn and speak my mind here, and if the guy who makes it possible breaks the rules and it helps him out, I really don't care.

Take care! Brandon

I appreciate the existence of this forum and the effort that the individuals involved go to in order to keep it up and running. If you are not interested in the offers the owners present, ignore them. It takes very little effort to only look into threads that hold your interest, and considerably more to publicly complain about them. You are welcome to come and go as you please. It is a free country, and a free forum. What more could you ask for?

Hi y'all,

Personally I don't see what all this fuss is about. If you don't like it here: Don't come! It's as simple as that. But don't come here just to "piss in the sandbox".

Mike is the one who makes these forums possible (at his own expense) and if he wants to recoup some of his money by offering us knives at blowout prices who are we to complain? In fact I bet profit was not in the forefront of his mind when he started this sale. Basically I think he started it to liquidate some inventory and give us forum members a option to get some good deals. Weather or not you exercise this option is up to you.

Later,
John

Guys, I more than anyone would like nothing more than for this site to never have to sell a thing. Unfortunately, that's not how the world works, and you can't make everyone happy all of the time, as much as we like to try.

I don't want to see anyone leave this site because they feel that we're abusing them, betraying them, or anything else.... that is not our intent.

Mike and I often disagree with how things should be done, but more often than not, we're heading in the right direction... the important thing to remember is the service we provide is there for you to use, free of charge, and you have to admit, it's pretty damn usefull, right?
