I gave this FPS a pass when it came out, as it got a reputation from the reviewers as a system hog. With my rather dated rig, I didn't think it'd run.

However, after reading a number of enthusiastic reviews, I decided to give it a try.
Shouldn't have waited; the thing runs beautifully on my system, and looks great.

This is a really nice shooter. Unlike the gritty Half-life sort of environment, you get gorgeous tropical islands, with well-rendered jungles, crystal-clear water, and pretty blue skies.
The format is pretty much standard FPS, shoot your way through the baddies enroute to your various goals. Still, it's pretty open, there are a variety of ways to approach things. The AI is pretty decent too, at least at times. They actually manuever, use cover, and try to flank you. (Of course, like all these games, sometimes they just stand there) They tend to be mightily unconcerned about the fate of their comrades as well, if you snipe guys the rest just sort of go about their buisness...
Quite enjoyable so far.

Heh! I know you'll enjoy it! There's some extremely tough areas. Post if you get stuck and I'll give you some hints.

Loved this game. I still have it, but haven't played it for a while (got stuck in this part where I first meet these giant mutants with rocket launchers right before this fortress). The multiplayer modes are really fun, too - try 'em out if you haven't already. My latest addiction is Ghost Recon Adv Warfighter (PC) - killer game.

Thanks for the suggestion. FPSs are my favorite sort of game. I'm currently 'working' my way through Doom 3 and Ironstorm. Next on my list is Command and Conquer Renegade.

I built a new computer with a GE Force 7900 GT KO graphics card and an Intel Duo Core 2 6600 processor. Doom3 is smooth-as-silk, even with every option turned on. :)

I think I've seen Far Cry at Wal Mart for $10 in the jewel case. Might have to pick it up next time I'm over there.

Ten dollars! Looks like I will wait until the hype for new games have died down. I paid about $50 when it first hit the streets. That's what I get when giving in to the hype.

Ten dollars!
It's $9.82 at Amazon.com.

That happens with all games. The game companies charge a fortune when a game is first introduced, to recover their investment quickly and to take advantage of the hype.

You can get lots of great used-to-be-cutting-edge PC games for $5-$10. Garage sales are great sources too. :)

That's on advantage of PC software over the console games; youll never find last year's X-Box 360 titles for $4.99.

Well, FPS are my favorite. I didn't hear too many exciting things about C&C Renegade, but if you want a really good game with a decent story line, I'd check out F.E.A.R. - kinda scary, gory, and will look fantastic on that 7900GT. Also look at Half Life 2, Quake 4, and Rainbow Six Vegas.

Those are all on my list. I own Renegade already, but have never installed it.

The Tom Clancy / Rainbow Six games are too hard... Maybe if I was 13 again... :(

I'd also like to play the sequel to No One Lives Forever. The first one was rather simple, but still a lot of fun.

Gunman Chronicals was lame. I wouldn't recommend it unless you find it for $1 and have a coupld of hours to kill.

How is the solo game play on Quake 4? Is it directed more towards online/network players?

Far cry is great...except the helecopter at the ship that just dumb to be so hard

FEAR had a great ending

Halo was fun and the ending was good

but better than all of those is PAIN KILLER

Good. In fact, I have a "copy" of it, and can't play with other Quake 4 people, so I had been playing the campaign, or storyline. Pretty good. Your standard 'alien vs. space marines' type thing. Online gaming is probably one of the best, I hear, but I'm waiting for Quake Wars. If you like online play, take a look at Battlefield2, Battlefield 2142, and the cheap but extremely fun Unreal Tournament 2004.

Painkiller is good too. I hear you can get that on the cheap, as well.

I like farcry for the 360, but its 2 games in one.(like a bundle) I was expecting it to be different by the time I beat the first one, but it's too much of the same.
Gears of war was much more fun.
