Hi!

I think this piece deserves a spot in here as well - it's Farid's latest special project with one of those steels you probably won't be seeing much at all (as far as knives are concerned). CPM-REX 121 hardened to 68-70 HRC.

Farid, in my view being the undisputed master of super-hard to work with steels, delivered an impressive package with this big folder! All titanium construction (ti-handle, clip, spacer, lockpin) with beryllium copper pivot screws.

I didn't have much time today, but managed three quick snaps of the K2 on my home setup:

A quick side by side shot with one of my Farid Mehr Mules (REX as well).

More on this and others stunning K2s can be found in Farid's thread in the KinfeMaker's market.

Best regards,
Alex

That is AWESOME.....................but with a HRC hardness of 68-70 wouldn't it chip REALLY bad with any kind of use.

Hi!

From what I've seen on my REX Mule, occasional light batoning and all "regular" tasks didn't do anything to the blade. Time will tell, how the K2 fares, as it will be my EDC for now.

Regards,
Alex

Yep, not a bad fella, our Farid

Has a few more he does too...

Hi!

Got to love Farid's knives and exotic steels!

Here's the rest of my Mules (an early pic) - 2xREX, 1x D2, D3, D6.

Alex

Hi!

Here's one more quick snap:

As for resharpening - depends on where you are. In the field, not at all (ypou probably wouldn't even put a scratch in it...). It is pretty workable with a good setof stones though and can take a nice mirror polish (I have yet to do that on my K2, but did on one of my Mules). It will take quite some time though! Given the relatively thick blade, my REX Mule ist a very good cutter. Needless to say that the edge hardly wears down from cutting.

Alex

2013-02-15 17.00.15.jpgI hope to do some testing this weekend. For now, it's fun just to handle this beast. It makes some of my large folders look a bit mundane and ordinary.

I reprofiled my mule and it took the longest out of all the other knives I've done that to. Took it down to about 26-28 degrees inclusive using the WE (my regular waterstones didn't do much) and it is scary now. The edge holds up pretty well against whatever I've thrown at it, and I've just had to strop it after cleaning. I tried to get a mirror polish on the edge, but couldn't get it to the same degree as with my other knives. I have no problem polishing the edge of my other knives using paper wheels, but REX-121 seems like it would take a very long time judging from whatever progress I made. I plan to reprofile the K2 as well.

Hi!

Striderco, sorry to hear about the delay, but it's well worth the wait! ;)

I did in fact sharpen all of my Mules and others on an Edge Pro Apex in the end, which worked fine, if somewhat time consuming.

Alex

I will most likely send mine off to Richard J and have him work his magic with his paper wheels. It ll come back splitting hairs! Richard makes a small neck knife out of a similar steel and he said he ll have no problem putting a screaming edge on the REX!

That is what cool about super steels. Super wear resistance, super hardness and still tough.

There is a reason that it is being used as a competition chopper steel. If you use it as a pocket knife, It should be stellar.

I bet that knife now looks so chipped you might as well throw it in the trash. Especially because you used it as an EDC. Grats on wasting hundreds of dollars on a knife that will just chip! God people are retarded!
