Farid Mehr Mini K2.
This is my first knife over $300. I was browsing an online retailer a little over a month ago for customs and midtechs and it caught my eye, hard. I kept going back to it. Even when I found another knife I liked, I'd compare them side by side and for me, the Mini K2 won out every time. So.. I parted with a few Spydercos and a custom fixie and I placed the order.
I sent Farid a pm on here with a couple questions and he replied within 24 hours. Nice guy. That reinforced my feelings that my purchase was a good idea.
So yesterday it came. Opening a box with a new knife inside is always fun and exciting, but this one was a new level of heart thumping. It came in a zip up padded pouch (thanks Knifecenter).
To me, every detail is flawless. The bronze titanium scales are thick, smooth, and surprisingly ergonomic. I have XL hands so it fills out my hand wonderfully.
The D3 steel is very rare in knives (one feature that really turned me on). It is exceptionally hard. You can really feel the grain of the grind. I'd call the blade shape a Persian inspired Bowie.
Farid's thumb hole is knurled on the inside like a gear giving your thumb a bit more purchase. It's a nice touch.
The standoff at the bottom of the handle is BIG. I've never seen one that large..and the finish is spectacular. Depending on the angle and light you get deep browns/bronze, purples and blues, green, and even some pink/red.
Centering is perfect.
Farid opted for Teflon washers on this knife. I know many people these days are enamored with bearing systems (as am i), but for a knife this big and heavy the Teflon gives you a smooth ride that is under control when opening and closing.
Lock stick has been mentioned on this model as well as the Spyderco version. After opening and closing it around 40 or 50 times I'm happy to report that the lock stick has diminished quite a bit.
Lockup is right at 25-30%.
The Mini K2 gets an A+ in my book. I cannot find a fault on it anywhere. If it sounds like it may be your kind of knife, for $550, I can't recommend it enough. Not sure how many they have in stock but it can't be too many.
