This is my latest cutting competition chopper, made from 6mm thick D3 tool steel, 60rc, black paper micarta handle finished with a rough texture for grip, aluminium lanyard hole tubes. The knife is made to Blade Sports rules. This chopper is very light weight.
Thanks for looking,
Farid

Farid,

What are the properties of D3 compared to D2, in terms of relative toughness and stain resistance?

Nicely executed Blade Sports design--would like to see that 6 mm spine/ricasso/tang if you have a pic. Can't quite tell from the pics whether the tang is hidden, full or tapered?

This chopper is very light weight.

Do you happen to have the weight in ounces?

Thanks--nicely done!
Will

edited to add: I see from some analysis I found online that D3 has higher wear resistance but lower impact toughness as compared with D2, and has more chromium and more carbon. I suppose if you are chopping rope, wood and straw impact toughness is not a huge concern.

With the higher chromium content, I would think it may be a little more stain resistant than D2, but presumably with over 2% carbon there is less free chromium available to enhance stain resistance. D3 is described as having mild corrosion resistance.

Hi will,
Don't have the weight but here is the pic.
the Differences between D2 and D3 is:

D2 has 1.55% carbon, 12% Chrom and around 0.20 Vanadium. D3 has 2.1% carbon, 12% chrom. D3 gets alot harder than D2, and out cuts D2 by around 20-25%. Same stain resistance, D2 has a little more toughness.

Thanks! I was adding information to my original post while you were replying. Sounds like our info on D3 vs D2 is in agreement. I didn't remember D2 having that much chromium. By "out cuts" I assume you mean edge retention due to higher wear resistance. Interesting stuff.

I like to use D3 and D6 alot,

D6 has 2.2% carbon, 12% chrom and 0.75 -1% Tungsten (W), D3 and D6 are high performance tool steels.
take care

cool.. do you sell these? What is approx. cost on a similar? And I see no website in sig??? Do you have one?? I've seen some of your other folders.. Saving my pennies for a Farid knife of some kind..

I will be making more of these choppers very soon,
If you like to have one please send me a pm.
thank you

Very nice. I love how you taper the spine back. It was one of my favorite features in my comp knives too. Good luck and don't try to break Dan Keffler's right hand before the competition... he is ambidextrous :-)

Thanks Michael, yes the spine grind line is nice, it makes the chopper lighter, it's fast, if weight is what the user wants then leave it out.
take care
Farid
