Farid T5000 ?

Here's a photo:

I've never seen or held one personally, but they are rumored to be enormous. They're pretty expensive too (around $1000) if I recall correctly...............

Recluse,

Thank you very much for that photo, it's just what I was looking for.

About that price...well good lord, I had no idea they were that expensive..I was guesstimating around the cost of the T1000..s/T/$ I suppose...

I guess I can scratch the T5000 off my list at that price, unless I can find a really used one, with only 1 scale :D

Just found out something very interesting..

The T5000 has two framelocks..one on top and one on the bottom as well. If this knife is as massive as it looks, 2 locks would seem to be a bit of overkill, ironically enough.

Hopefully someone that owns, or has owned, one of these will shed some light on this....

I think I can help with that. The tab on top is actually used in place of a stop pin, kind of like Bob Dozier uses on his Tab-Stop folder.............

I have Farid's catalog somewhere at home. If I can find it I will scan in anything that seems relevant.

Recluse,

Ah, so you only need to manipulate the bottom lock to close it? That's good news, because it would seem to be about impossible to disenage both locks with only one hand, thereby making the T5000 a 2 handed closer.

Any information you have would be much appreciated.

Wonder of wonders, the gods are smiling down on me because I have actually located a T5000 at a great price, and will soon own the toughest most overbuilt folder in the world.
Just gotta sell off a few prized possessions to get it...easy come, easy go.

Exactly. :)

I just found the catalog, but there's not much to offer that I haven't already told you. Although, one interesting thing is that for the blade he offers 1/4" 440C or 5/16" CPM15V! That is one HUGE folder you've found for yourself. :)

Congratulations on your score! I for one would love to see some detailed pics when it arrives.........

Recluse,

Ah, that is interesting. I will have to inquire on the blade thickness to determine which blade steel mine is. I'm hoping it's 440C, for stain resistance and overall managability...I don't think I really had a clear idea of just how big the T5000 really is after all.

I'm just wanting something different than everyone else has, and the T5000 would seem to fit that bill quite nicely. I can't find any information on it anywhere on the net, and very scant information here at bladeforums, so I think I'm on the right track.
If nothing else, it will be a novelty knife for me. I don't really imagine having any use for it, or even carrying it for that matter...just something different.

Once I get it in hand, I'll try to get some pics and scan them in...should be good for a laugh or two.

Damn Mike, if you ever fall off a boat with that knife clipped to your pocket you are going straight to the bottom. That is about as massive a folder as I have ever seen.

it seems to me when I looked at Fairds stuff at Blade Show 2001 that his edge is carbide and cant be sharpened by the average knife owner. His knives are massive and if you cant open it you can use it as club.

Keith,

Oh yeah, it looks to be a real monster of a folder..I don't think I'm going to be toting it around too much, or using it for that matter.

I just wanted something a bit different..Once I got my DDR Apogee, which is just perfect for me, I figured it was time for something totally impractical and novel...I think I found it.

BeowulftheGeat,

That's just another reason that I probably won't ever actually use it. I will probably make a great conversation piece though, and be good for a few laughs.

I hate to sound like a rude newbie but the farid 5000 is simply butt ugly. Would make one hell of a boat anchor during a hurricane though.

yup, people's tastes certainly vary, but what would you do with something this massive? Get a special "backpack sheath"??????

Oh, it's an ugly beast of a knife, but honestly, it's not that bad once you have it in hand.

The fit & finish are first rate, and really, it's not even that impractical. Unfortunately for me, it's only got the righty thumbstud, and it's a press fit.

In a normal size, the T5000 would make a great knife really, especially with two thumbstuds on it.

Overall, it's a really expensive conversation piece.
