I found this in a box of knives at an antique store on the bottom shelf pushed way to the back and covered up with a box. barley saw the small sign that said all knives $3 bucks. I rummaged through it and found nothing good till I saw a tang stamp I had heard of but never seen. "Fairmount Cutlery Co. N.Y. USA". From what I read a while back I thought it was a camillus company if Im not mistaken. Either way for 3 bucks its a brand I dont have. And until I got home I didint notice the fancy back spring, well not really the back spring more the liners I guess. Anyway its not perfect by a long shot but a very cool piece to me especially if its out of the camillus family. Any dates or other info would be great.- Joel

1/3 stars for collectabiltiy

BRL's book has it a M rating

Neat liners! Yes, it was/is a Camillus made knife. Fairmount is not often seen on knives with the "buckhorn-type" handles. I have six examples of that handle style that were made for Sears (Dunlap branding) circa 1938-41 though. And a couple of Kents made for F.W.Woolworth's. Notice no cover pins? Look at the liners inside and you will see tiny triangular tabs punched thru the liners (a part of the liner) to crimp the covers on. And be careful of that handle. It is quite flammable. Trust me on that. Evidently it is a celluloid composite, because it does cause a lot of corrosion on associated blades and liners. John and Charlotte Goins pegged the Fairmount mark use by Camillus at circa 1930-1940.

I believe the gimped liners are factory.

Here are a few more Fairmounts to illustrate the variety of handle materials and patterns employing this mark:

The same handle material on a dual-marked Camillus Swordbrand jack:

Camillus added this mark in 1906, though this knife is later than that, contemporary with the others shown.
