Hey guys, I have a SAK Fieldmaster but it feels a bit flimsy. The Farmer seems a bit thicker and sturdier. The scales on the Farmer also seem to be stronger.

The Fieldmaster is similar to a camper or tinker or any mid-size SAK.

Can anyone verify this?

Thanks in Advance

the farmer is built like a tank.... it is much more solid and the blade is thicker than on the celidor models... the field master is a great edc however, the scissors, and phillipshead make it handy.

Yes, the Alox handle knives from Victorinox have slightly beefier blades and tools; however, the plastic handle models like the Fieldmaster have "more" tools. I have a 1991 model Soldier with the hollow rivet but rarely carry it. I have carried the Fieldmaster for about fifteen years now, including the last five years of my Army career. The mix of tools on the Fieldmaster fits my needs better than any other Victorinox knife, and I've used most of the tools! I've never had a Fieldmaster tool fail me. If you have a mission that requires a knife with a stronger blade than the Fieldmaster, you need something like a fixed blade or a Sebenza or some other "good" one hand opener.

Great advice. I am afraid fo dropping the fieldmaster and breaking the scales.

I will probably get a Farmer but I feel more confident about my fieldmaster now.

Thanks

I've dropped my celidor models quite a few times they're plenty tough..but the alox models are tougher...

Agree with Riley.

Farmer is easily my favorite SAK. Only scissors could make it better.

My favorite Vic knife is the Farmer. My favorite knife is my scibeer Farmer w/scissors. This said, I'd be very happy to have a Fieldmaster. Those scales (and tools) are plenty tough.

I have the Field Master. It holds up very well. If you drop it on concrete or something it may break the scales but they will replace them at no cost if they do. In 40 years I have only broken one scale and that was on my explorer.

Farmer all the way, love them. Top one is a Soldier, red and blue are Farmers. I ground the lanyard loop off the red one, the only thing I don't care for on the Farmer. Wish they never stopped making the lanyard tube style like my Soldier.

I love my ALOX saks, but I seriously doubt you'll break your scales, especially by dropping it. I have carried a huntsman for years, dropped it more times then I can count, it one run over one snowy morning by my wife, and the scales are still intact.

If I might suggest you go to felinevet and look over some of the custom saks he has, including farmers with the Hard Anodizing III Alox scales. My current EDC is a custom from Scibeer, a woodsman with main blade, woodsaw, and awl, with HAIII scales and a pocket clip. Thin enough so I forget it is there, with all the tools I want, nothing I don't. A little more pricey, but it is a knife you'll buy once, then hand it down, not replace.

The Vic Farmer is a fantastic SAK for everyday carry. Recently got one on advice, haven't put it down since.

The Farmer really is the end all pocketknife for me. Has all the tools needed in an emergency, not too bulky, easily replaceable if lost. I never carry anything else anymore.
Just got an ORANGE one from Swiss Bianco recently. Way cool!

The fieldmaster/huntsman are my choice. Everything I need and nothing that I don't.

I know that scales crack occasionally but I've dropped SAKs on hard floors, even dropped my fieldmaster....oddly enough onto one of the large rocks of a fire ring, and bounced into the fire! I got it out quick enough, no cracks, just a little ding in the scale.I have a tinker I've dropped dozens of times at work and It has never cracked, so not saying they don't but they take more abuse than most people might think ;)
