I'm very new to the custom knife game. So far I only have one. A Lozier hunter with Desert Ironwood scales and double dovetail bolsters. I really like it. There are undoubtedly knive makers out there that are equal to the overall quality, fit, and finish. But I bet there are not many that do it for the same amount of money.

After handling it and admiring it for a good part of the day I decided one wasn't enough. I've got three more Loziers on the way. Two hunters, one with ivory scales and one with sheephorn and a semi-skinner with ivory scales also. With the exception of some decent filework all of these Lozier knives are somewhat plain utilizing ATS 34 steel. The average cost for all four knives is around the $350 range.

Can anybody recommend other bladesmiths out there that turn out equal work for about the same cost?

Most of the ABS dudes can make you a hunter in your price range.

If you can make it to the Blade Show in Atlanta in June there'll be many, many makers there who can make quality hunters in that price range or below, both from the forged blade camp and from the stock removal camp. If you're new to custom knife collecting, I think the investment into making a trip to the Blade Show for educating yourself, as well as scoring great knives, is the best thing you can do. It'll open your eyes to the possibilities and prices that are out there. I wish I had done that early on in my collecting.

I have one that I bought and had scrimmed by Fautina Mead. I really like the way Don dovetails the scales (I don't know if you can see this in the attached picture but the scales slide into a cutout) and that the knife including tang and bolsters is all one piece of steel.

And if you have a couple grand you don't know what to do with here is a very nice Don Lozier production.

And a recent Ebay listing that didn't sell. I wonder why?

DGG,

The knife you have pictured looks exactly like the first Lozier hunter I got. Mine has the double bolsters (dovetailed of course) also but has Desert Ironwood scale instead of ivory.

I must admit your ivory handled one looks better. There's something about high polish steel and ivory that really does it for me!!!

I will probably try to funagle one more Lozier knife but I want one similar if not exactly laid out like yours.

Thanks for sharing that eye candy.

Marlin: I was a hardcore Al Mar and automatic collector, untill I started spending time here,as of late I am watching for any offerings from Lamont coombs, I have bought a few different blades from him in the past couple of months, and his skill is topnotch, knives and sheaths both beautiful!! They are in your price range, he is a gentleman and talented craftsman, do a search as he has a few blades listed that are still for sale, best of luck in your collecting!

....this thread was a year old when the No0b(inzane) resurrected it....Marlin's last contribution to BladeForums was in April.
