What is the fastest wasy to open a Spyderco....both tip up and down models.
(I tried a search but I didnt find the posts).

So far, the thumb and first finger pinching the hole and flicking the handle down towards the palm is the fastest for me.

Thanks
Ken

I may be a bit loose on the terminology, plus I'm a lefty with right handed knives as usual carries, but here goes...
- Drop opening, where, as the knife is drawn (from the left pocket)with the middle finger along the clip, a flick of the wrist drops the knife open to a backhand grip - a fav.
- Usual kinetic opening, where as the knife is produced from the right hand pocket (or just from a closed position), a short sharp elliptical flick snaps the blade out.
My work knife, a SS Police, takes some persuading with both methods, but the Military is awe inspiring with both

Ferret: I personally call the flicking, torqueing, or wrist motion moves INERTIAL openings...
Due to the GUNTING and the Pat. Pending KINETIC opener...KINETIC OPENING is now the energy from two bodies impacting to open the blade.KINETIC opening is EXTREMELY fast..for one doesn't try to open the blade..upon contact it opens!
Yes..you can hold the blade by the hole and as you draw it opens..Sal can open a Military and thrust-tip strike a paper bag held out in front of him BEFORE the holder drops it and it falls to the ground..very impressive..
inertial openings can be done in forward or reverse grip..The inertia of the blade is overcome by the twisting or torqueing movement of one's hand or wrist..hmmm very gravity knife like..hmmm oops IT IS GRAVITY DEFYING..oops...hmmmmm
of course theres the ole single finger NORMAL opening....
Theres the two handed opening..one hand on blade other on knife as hands opening motion becomes part ofthe initial striking.( Like the two handed Israeli cocking of a firearm as it punches out to shoot)VERY FAST!

OK, there's many ways to open a knife WITHOUT SPRINGS, BUTTONS, CAM RELEASES, or other nifty gonna break eventually methods...

Sorry Bram

, I knew I was perilously close to talking complete rubbish nameswise, reading and rereading Gunting posts has seeped into my subconcious and now everything is kinetic this, kinetic that

Bram,
After reading your post, I went and read everything else I could about the Gunting. Very interesting!
One thing, could you explain how the blade of the Gunting opens in Kinetic opening. DO you strike your target with the ramp of the blade?
Is this the ONLY knife that can open in this manner? After consideration, I think that the Gunting is a mean knife. TO be honest, the design didn't grab me to begin with but the more I read about it and the more I look at, the more I want one!....

Yes..it opens upon contact..like a turnstile, the faster it enters the faster it opens!!!It can glide open as well..LOL!
Well I had an older design made by REKAT that Opened Kinetically, but its no longer made. The GUNTING is the ONLY knife made to open that way...( yes YOU can make a Jot do it..not well..There was no intent in the design of it to accomodate KINETIC opening..LOL..)
there are threads in the general section and in CSSD- Tactics & Training Section of the forum...
Email me and I'll attach the GUNTING promo-info sheets..
The 4 volume tape series is available from SPYDERCO's SFO or from VIDEO QUEST 1-800-340-9664
Glad you see that beauty is in the eye of the beholder..
" to be aware is to be alive!"

Bram, that was a FAST reply! You have got my curiosity stoked up to the max now. I really want to see the Gunting in action.

Okay, I have to have a look at those videos. No choice. Do you know if Video Quest has an online presence? I did a search but nothing came up.....

Ken: George is just finishing his web site while in Florida..as a matter of fact he just left here to go back to his hotel..We set up at 8am tommorow...
his email is gdenson@wave-net.net
OK?????
see ya

I discovered this by acccident while playing with my Starmate:

Hold the closed knife pointing forward with the blade facing down, parallel to the ground. Then quickly move your hand downwards a little, and as the blade leaves the handle, jerk your hand backwards a bit and it will fly open and lock! I've got this to a point where I can do it with a very little actual movement. It almost looks like the knife is an auto.

I wouldn't show a police officer this little stunt though...

Bram,
THanks for the info. I have emailed George about the videos....apparently he has a special promotion on right now!

mr44....nice one! I tried that on my Wegner Jr and the blade flies open a lot better than my method of doing it with the knife horizontal. Thanks!

Flicking it is really hard on the lock..really...LOL!
plus thats what we meant by rotational inertial opening...
SMILE!!
