Hi folks,

I'm planning on putting some G-10 or micarta scales on a filet knife and
was wondering what kind of fastening material/equipment I should use.
Is it best to use corby (sp?) pins or brass rod or ...?

Many thanks,

corby's give you added mechanical strength. Just makes me sleep better :p
I have used just brass and mocaics too. If you go with brass gut grooves in the center of the pin to add a place for the glue to grip. Be sure to rough everything up that will be glued, use epoxy and have thinner ready to clean up in front of the handle where it squishes out onto the blade. You'll clean up the rest by sanding it off when you shape the handle.

Also, I was reading something... I think it was on Bladeforums WAAAY back when and the maker said he always soldered bolsters onto his fillet knives because when he didn't, the flex in the blade would pry up the scales if they were just epoxied on. I've never made a fillet knife and I imagine it depends on the type of fillet knife (really thin and flexible, vs something thicker), but it sounded like good advice to me.

I'll opt for the corby's and may also try some bolsters on another filet than I'm working on.

Best regards,
Dana
