I was bumming around this weekend in the Ocala NF, and ran across this Pine stump. Dang thing was packed with fat lighter. I brought some home. :)

thanks Mannlicher, i added it to the blog. Great fatwood stump pic, hopefully many people will spot similar ones in their area and find fatwood!

This is a different stump, but it shows what may be just under the surface. First glance at this one, did now reveal any lighter wood, but some prying and cutting revealed a fine little pocket of 'high octane' fat wood.
Pieces off this small load are more like rocket fuel than wood.

I've been trying to figure out how to locate this stuff. I take it pine stumps are a good place to start?

Yep, the "rottier" the better I say. Bring your tools. There is real fatwood gold in some of them. Don't forget the knots as well.

Does alot of the resin stick to your knife/axe? If so what do you use to get it off?

Thanks
Jason

The highest quality fatwood I have ever seen came from a VERY rotten stump, basically soft, rotten, and falling apart. But the base (at ground level) and the roots were pretty much pure resin. Very dense, sounded like heavy plastic when dropped on concrete.

I spent about an hour last weekend looking for some while marking trees to cut down (mostly trees that fell over the winter) and came up empty handed...i'll give it another go sometime during my spring break.
