beanbag posted some pictures of his recent hike with his son and it made me want to bring along my camera this weekend. It is a great thing to document the times we spend with our sons as a reminder of the impact we are having on them. We know this means a lot to our boys but it doesn't always come out of their mouths. Well...today it did. On the way home my 7 year old told me he "was so happy to have me as a Father." "Why?" I asked. "Because other dads probably don't take their kids on day hikes or buy them knives." Whether or not our boys say this doesn't change the fact that they all feel this way about us when we make the right decisions about the time we spend with them.

Hopefully this is an encouragement to those of us that do these things and don't get this verbal feedback. You should know that what my son said is the impact you are leaving on the heart of your boys.

Enjoy it while you can. I have always taken my son in the woods with me. He is 25 now and that is still a big part that we still share together. There is always a little hickup when they get into the girls but it all works it self out!

Awesome pics man, looks like you have your hands full at times :)

As everyone said, enjoy it while it lasts, it passes quickly. My oldest is grown now and only wants to go out maybe once or twice a year. Luckily she has a little sister who is six and has LOTS more energy than I do, and we go out pretty often.

Same here 'Ol Bud..My boy's love the outdoors, I try to spend as much time as I can with them hiking & fishing. They love it ! They just had their 8th Birthday last week.

Keep'em busy in the outdoors & it'll keep'em out of trouble everywhere else;)

Thanks for breaking my heart. (Just kidding...sort of.)
Take your kids out into the woods before it's too late!

17 year-old daughter...primary interest....shopping at the mall. Could only get her into the woods now if I hide a
"Forever 21" gift card in a stump.

15 year-old son....XBox360. I think it has actually implanted some type of wireless device into his brain stem. Get him out into the woods? Maybe with a roll of duct tape.

I think if you get the kids started early & keep'em going as much as possible then they will take it as a normal activity & it will be easier to keep'em interested in the long run. It will make it easier to get'em going to if they have their own gear, let them pick out a pack & help with picking out the gear to go in the pack. My boy's love to watch Dual Survival & after a few episodes they were asking what type of knife Cody was wearing, I told them a Mora & thats what they wanted so I let them pick out their own Mora - One red & one Blue scout model mora from SMKW ! The love'em !

Good job getting out there n2!

The way to spend more time with the kids is to get them interested in the stuff you like to do. For me that's wilderness adventures, biking, paddling and generally being outside. My son is an aviation nut, and loves making videos. I try to indulge his passion for that stuff as much as possible, so we also get to bond doing the he likes to do.

Check out his Youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/iissyy123 It's pretty kick a$$! I'd say I was with him during the shooting of about 90% of those 143 videos.
