Took the kiddo out for a quick fishing trip this weekend. As the fishing was S-L-O-W, was able to play around a bit with our knives - her BK14 and my KABAR neck knife.

Morning setup:

No bites after a couple of hours, so she asked me if she could play around with her knife. Decided to show her how to make a tent peg:

After some time whittlin' away, we were both able to make reasonable facsimiles of some pegs:

Not bad for her first one - come to think of it, it was my first one as well [emoji3]

She managed to finally pull one out just before we packed up - just in time for lunch. The 1117 did a reasonably good job cleaning the fish. Me thinks it'll be riding shotgun in my tackle box this summer. Also realized it's a good thing my family doesn't rely on me to bring home fish, or we'd all be anorexic.

Later that evening I let her practice her fire making skills in the fire pit.

Success!

All in all a good productive day with the young'un, even if we didn't get anywhere fancy. Thanks for looking.

Gezzzz thanks for sharing. I carved a knife out of wood the other day for my little guy.. enjoy life and happy cutting.

Great post. Looks like your little girl has been taught the proper way to handle and respect a blade. Bravo, sir.

Just wanted to say I think it's awesome how you're teaching your daughter to enjoy the outdoors. How old is she? My little girl is about to turn 5 and I would love to get her involved in these activities, the sooner the better.

How do you like your 1117? Been toying with idea of picking one of those up.

I'm…liking it ok so far. Getting more comfortable with the handle. Definitely helped with the addition of the scales. I also reprofiled the edge and it's much more slicey now. Not a hard-use or continuos-use blade, but it does the job. Like I said, it's gonna be living in my tackle box this summer for the odd cutting job.

Thanks man; appreciate it. She's 8 now; I think she was 6 when I was gifted the knife for her. We "shared" it for the first year or so, then I seemed to have lost all visitation rights to her knife last fall lol. Honestly, as long as your daughter is responsible enough to follow your directions, I say go for it. My daughter was such a sponge when I started teaching her knife safety and such, and now she's the one asking me to teach her something new with the knife whenever we're in the woods.

You done good Dad!

Haha, thanks man!

Very knife...uh I mean nice. I've loved teaching my kids respect and safe enjoyable use of guns and knives. Good times.

Great thread! Looks like an awesome day!

This! I've started early with my guys too. If they listen well they get to do the fun things. My son is 5 and my daughter is 3

Aikiguy,

Too cool,

I love seeing kids in the outdoors. What a great father/daughter day!
More kids should have parents like you.

Learning how to build a fire is a lifelong skill. Just awesome!

Thanks guys! I'm glad she shows interest in the outdoors; gives me a push to get off my couch and out there for sure.

looks like fun. my daughter got to use my bk13 (under close supervision) on our last trip. made a pretty good marshmallow stick. she's 4. we started knife safety with her play-dough knives about a year ago now.

Great post! I just gifted a new Ka-Bar to my brother and hope he spends time with his daughter the same way.
