I did not know what I was being given until I looked into it further. He just said it was a "knife for space", and told me to hold onto it or sell it. I'm turning to you guys for any info that isn't already out there. I think it's a bit older because it has the brown sheath and not a black one. Any other help like determining age, value, etc?

Hard to tell from those photos, 70's-80's what color is the stone?Writing on stone? .... I'm pretty sure valuation is an off limits subject here, Check Ebay for sold comparables,, nice knife but not rare, Bart

The Astro never came with a black sheath. I suppose you could have ordered one if you wanted it.

It's late '70's through early to mid '80's, IMO, based on blade grind and sheath type/stitching. Bart is correct; as to value, check eBay's completed listing for comparable recently sold items. If you want more sales/value information here, you'll need to upgrade your membership level - dems da rulez... ;)

I like the Astro. To me it's a better feeling and more user friendly knife than the short 18. And it's a part of history. It's one of only three items that I can think of that were part of the 'space race' that were, and still are, available to civilians and still made by the original manufacturer.

(The other two? Omega Speedmaster and Fisher Space Pen)

Dang! I forgot about Tang! Though I'm pretty sure a 60's vintage 17 will have aged a little more gracefully than a 60's jar of Tang.:D

In Mexico last week I bought a bottle of Jugo de naranja, thinking it was orange juice - freakin' Tang! What happened to Tang? It's being repackaged, bottled, and sold en Mehico!
