Father's Buck knives

I have recently been given a few knives by my father and would like some info on them. My batteries ran out on my camera so I only have pics of the first. This one says Buck 500 on the blade and the shelf that came with it is stamped The Ruffed Grouse Society. The opposite side of the blade says 036/150. I am new to this and haven't much knowledge toward collectors knives. Or even if these are considered collectable. I don't want to risk using them anyway.
He also gave me 2 other Buck knives that say 560n on the blade. They both have 5 spots in each side of the handle that are drilled about halfway through each side piece. Both have metal handles. One I know he used for a short while and the second is still in the wrapper and box and says XLT-TI Crystal on the end of that box.
He has had these in his collection for quite a while and I never even saw the grouse one until he gave these to me. I do remember seeing the Buck boxes in his giant safe and am still curious of what is in the others.
Are they worth anything?

Hi marcb,

Welcome to the Buck Forum!

Yes those Buck knives are collectable.

Your 500 is the slim line model "Duke 500". The Ruffed Grouse gold etch was a limited edition issued in 1987. Yours is "036/150", it is the 36th knife out of 150 made. This knife had a MSRP of $150 and current value of $80-100 +or - (values of collectable's are down due to the economy, so the knife could bring in less on today's market). I have one just like this and the art work is fantastic!

The other knives you said are the model 560. This is a light weight version of the folding hunter 110. The handles are made from titanium, this model is no longer made and therefor collectable. The value of the 560 IMHO is about $50-90 depending on condition. I don't collect the 560 so others here may have better information on this model for you.

That's a beautiful knife, jb and marc. If the value is only $80. or so, I'd recommend holding on to it either to wait for a better selling market or just to have a nice collector's item.

Beautiful Ruffed Grouse knife.

I'd hang onto it forever.

Let us know if you ever decide to put it on that auction site.

:)

The price's I state are only my opinion....and that don't mean squat. On any given day the folks who want a particular knife decide what they are willing to pay for it. Kind of like how the wind blows from day to day, some days it blows strong and other days not at all. If more than one collector is looking for the same knife....their funding accounts will decide what the true value is to them.

The true value of marcb's knives.....priceless. Why? Because his father gave them to him and now they are part of his family history! As one of my BFF here on this site used to say....your mileage may vary.

A new with box XLT-TI Crystal 560. just sold down by the the bay for $122.50 a little higher than some other recent Crystal 560s. Value IMO is $50 to $ 122.50. Once again that is only a "guesstamant". This knife was made in 2001 with Crystal Titanium handles and most likey has a 420HC steel blade (unless marked otherwise). It was designed to be lighter than the Buck "110" at the same size. No knife is worth selling if it has sentimental value.

Longbow,

There have been several 560's that have sold recently on ebay in the +$100 range. This is because Buck cleaned out all of the old 560 parts and did a few short run build outs....different colored scales with different colored blades. This results in some very special 560's for the collectors:thumbup:. Again, folks you can take this info like a grain of salt;). I liked the gray colored scales with the champagne or gold colored blade...but, they were to much $$$ for me:rolleyes: as I don't collect them.

All very true except for one thing.

Your value estimates are valuable and you always give reasons if they seem high or low.

That's a huge gift to the less experienced collector because it gives him a frame of reference that he wouldn't otherwise have.

Yes, mileage may vary greatly on a given day, but thanks for your willingness to throw a number out there for the rest of us.

yes what the old timers say $ on any given day
is as verable as flea bay any given day
many of us have our favs we watch ..
i dont watch fixed blades
i watch EVERY day on any buck 110's and 112's
picking through 2000 listings that have buck in it
kinda watch some other non fixed but ...
some have a better idea what most will sell for
one thing you CAN bet on ...
if some of us old timers start talking we like some thing like "X"
they will show up as a flea there..
me i think some things are selling better lately
but if the economy dips they will also
the last buck batch of 560's brought a good price
as they should being the last buck issues!
and made most all 560's go up ..
a 3 line inverted in a bad frame topped 100$$$!!
over priced ? dont know know, not to 2 bidders any way
heck i dont bid much any more..
but a great many are depressed now and
even gold issues are not selling well
stag for some reason seems to be selling well ..
odd as i think it is over priced some..
so yes there are many thoughts ..
dont you newbies listen to any one of us old timers
take all each says as a single unique view point..

Here is another way to look at it:

How many times in your life will you be able to replace a $100. bill? Can't count 'em, right?

How many times in your life will you be able to replace a number 36 of 150 limited edition gold etch engraving on steel, a work of art, given to you by your father?

That's pretty good......but you can't expect to get the best stuff unless you just search "knife" and go through about 100,000 listings.

(Then, of course, you have to check "nife" and "knive" and "nive" to catch the ones that spell it wrong.)

:D

I have found many things like that on there. Brand names are one that I see a lot of. I try every combination that I can think of that might be close.

Thank you guys much for the input. I think these will stay in the family. After a discussion with him I found out that he won that knife at a Grouse Society banquet. I barely remember him going to those and some Ducks Unlimited banquets also. Says he has a knife from there also but isn't anything special. Tells ya how much I know. He's kept them hidden in his gun case. I'd would like to try and get some sort of display case for the grouse one. Although I wouldn't know what to do with the little wooden shelf without losing it.

Do you have access to shop tools where you can build your own case that would incorporate the shelf?

Yes, I'd build or buy a display case that would hold the shelf or figure a way to incorporate the shelf into a wall of bookshelves.

In time, you'll need more walls and bookshelves.

Think I'm kidding, don't you?

:D

Is there an easy way to hold the knife on it's shelf? My thought was to mount the shelf on the back of the display and have a glass front. Hanging the whole thing like a picture. Problem there is keeping the knife on there if anyone wants to move it. I could make one but have to find or think of a good plan first.

wally sells a semi hard foam board
you can cut it out line and recess the knife in it ..
or you can have supper mags in behind the knife blade
or do the shelf thing..
