Don’cha just hate it when attractive women come up to you at the mall and ask, “Is that a Rukus in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?” Especially if they add, “Or is it a Mini Rukus?” Which I have been packing as an EDC off and on since I got it down in Texas a year ago last Christmas. I love the Mini-Rukus. The thing is a tank, and after 10,000 or so openings it practically flips itself open. But it is a bit bulky for EDC pocket carry. So when my wife cut me loose at the mall yesterday so she could do some serious shopping by herself (we’ll celebrate 39 years on Father’s Day; I know when to take a hint), I naturally gravitated over to the Cutlery Shop, which as it turns out is one of the better kniferies in Calgary. I still had some of last month’s pension cheque burning a hole in my pocket. There, gleaming in a line of Benchmade’s, was a sleek 710 in D2. Just the thing, I thought, to avoid all those inevitable Mini-Rukus come-ons, so it accompanied me home. The Axis lock’s still a tad stiff, but that should loosen up with a drop of BreakFree and a few thousand openings. The front two thirds of the blade were hair popping sharp but there was a little burr toward on the rest, which was soon cleaned up on the DMTs. D2, as on my little Dozier, is a bit difficult to hone, but patience pays off with an incredible edge. I'm looking forward to slicing some steaks on Father's Day:D.

Congrats on the new 710, Ed. I picked one up a few months ago, also in D2. For such a large knife it seems to ride small in the pocket. Feels good in the hand, too.

The 710 has been my EDC for 8 years just for that reason, slim, carries well, but hides a large blade. :) Most of my other knives with a comparable blade have much larger handles. The 710 is very solid, even though it's thin. Mine works better than new as the action just gets better with age. I just wish I got the 710HS, I got the 710HSSR with the combo blade, but there is plenty of plain blade to work with. Love the M2 steel, wish they still offered it in M2...

Congrats!!!

The 710 is a classic knife for a reason - it is pretty darn good as a daily carry.

The 710 is my goto/standby knife in my daily carry managerie.

...we’ll celebrate 39 years on Father’s Day...

Congrats on the (very considerable) milestone--and the awesome knife (one I don't have but one of the many I covet). My wife and I will mark 5 years this weekend. She has dropped hints of getting me a noteworthy knife to mark the occasion, but money is a bit tight right now (and besides, I'd then have to find something equally pricey to reciprocate).

Matt
