Father's Day Axe Recommendation?

My parents recently started remodeling a family cabin for weekend getaways and possibly renting it out. I just found out that my dad wants an axe for wood chopping. Nice and big, single blade. Not a lot of experience chopping wood as far as I know. He's not a fancy tool kind of guy but he certainly wouldn't want it to break or anything. He's around 6 feet tall.

My budget is ~$50, maybe $75 if that's impossibly low. Anything come to mind?

I'd say CT, new make and fairly inexpensive for the quality. That way he wouldn't stand the chance to abuse an oldie.

Absolutely that's the right call. Good quality, USA made, fits the budget and will suit him. That's 4 straight recommendations, sounds like the answer.

June 18th this year - a Sunday.

I want to say vintage clean and sharp. I enjoy working stuff over but buying new doesn't diminish the gift at all. - you can still set it up for him as your personal touch on it.

This year a new production axe, next year you sharpen it up with him and get a good chat in. My own would think that was a good time.

That being said, a Council seems like a solid new purchase. You never know, the way I look at it, you might even inherit it. ;)

Whatever you decide, please share here - pics are good and Dad's are great.

*My father has a 5lb Council that he swears by that didn't have anything to do with me as far as selection.

Good excuse on weekends to patrol garage sales and flea markets with a few greenbacks in your pocket. With some knowledge of your dad's preferences you'll know after you've hefted a few whether it's awkward, too long or short, too light or weighty for his liking. Easiest of course is to scroll through the Council Tools site, as others have suggested, and merely hit the 'purchase' button. There ain't very many domestic axe makers (that are budget-priced) anymore.
