My wife gave me a Fathers Day gift this weekend, and managed to surprise the heck outta me. Went an' bought me a new rifle.

Bought me a 45/70 Sharps Reproduction, like this: http://www.emf-company.com/sharps-rifle-4.htm Mine would be the third one down.

I've always had a weakness for those. I don't think I've ever seen a rifle that would be neater for taking moose, caribou, or bear. She just made me promise to practice alot, shoot straight, and bring her home a Grizzly

More realistically I look forward to shooting floating long range ice chunks with it. In the Spring the local shootin' hole fills up with people blastin' at 'em with AR-15's, AK's, etc. I can't WAIT to take this old cannon out there to play. :D

Now all I gotta do is figure out what kinda loads to run in it, and scratch out the additional money for a folding tang peep sight.

Purty awesome gal, aint she? :D (I was referring to the wife, but yeah, the guns cool too, eh?) :D :D

Wow! I knew I missed out on something besides rugrats when I chose to not have kids...

Maybe it's not too late???

.

Wow man, that's gorgeous. I've got a real warm spot in my heart for the old single shot big bores.

So she's sending you out for grizzly with a single shot rifle? She didn't just take out a big insurance policy on you did she? (just kidding!)

That's a really nice rifle!

BTW C.Sharps company in Montana is for sale. Anybody with a cool 3.5 million gets the factory, machinery and the land with all of the tooling, patterns and the ongoing business.

Steve

I wonder why the Montana group is for sale?

I don't know any shooter who does not have a soft spot for the old single shots.

I've always wanted one, but the 1000 is hard to come by when you can't help but pick up several khuks each year.

and bring her home a Grizzly
It's great that your wife likes power tools.

That is one seriously cool-looking rifle. Let us know how she shoots.

Well, that certainly merits a month and a half of straight weekends polishing off the honey-do list . . .

At least a big smootch and a nice candlelight dinner out, fer cryin' out loud!

Great gal you have there!

Noah

Was it TOM HORN, the second-to-last Steve McQueen movie, in which he used that rifle?

I vaguely remember some quote like: "It has a trajectory like a rainbow...."

That's a really sweet rifle. I was looking at the Marlin Guide lever-action 45-70, which is a mite cheaper, but those are worth saving up for!

Runs,
Was in Alaska in 1950(really wild THEN)! Got chased out of camp by an Alaska Brown Bear. Are the mosquetoes still as big and a bother in the woods??
Oh yeah,Go after the Griz, leave the Brownies alone & PRACTICE!!
THE DUCK!

Thanks for all the kind remarks.

Jim- The mosquitoes are freakin' horrible this year, worst year I've ever seen for 'em. Got a Mosquito Magnet in the backyard working OT and it's still not keeping up with the swarms. Emptying it every two days. Used to just be every two to three weeks! Wish I coulda seen Alaska in the 50's. Especially my hometown Wasilla. It's populating waaaay too fast around here. Another few years and I'll have to move farther out into the boonies. Fleeing the masses again, story of my life...

MBE- thank you! I'm in love with it so far. They are expensive buggers, aint they? The one I got goes for $1000 out of Cabelas. My wife, God bless her sweet heart, even got a steal on it. Unfired for $500  I'm debating between a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 or an 1894 in .357 for my next purchase. Either would make use of already available ammo in my household.

Noah- Would you watch what yer sayin' fer cryin' out loud?! She sometimes reads this stuff....I don't want no one puttin' ideas in her head! :D :D

Aardvark- Yup...she leaves no doubt as to who wears the 18 volt Dewalt in this household...(hint: it aint the externally plumbed one) :D

Munk- totally agree....there's just something in that kinda gun that just gets to most of us true gun nuts. At least the nostalgic and romantic among us. I'd have never been able to own one if my wife hadn't gotten this one for $500.

Ferguson- you might be onto something...When she first got it for me I kept wondering what I'd done right...maybe I need to be considering what I've done wrong? :D

First I go out hunting with underpowered rifles, then I get one with decent power, but a single shot...maybe one of these days I'll get it right..... :D

Once again, thanks for the kind remarks from everyone. I'll let y'all know how it shoots this next weekend, I hope.

Runs,
I understand, one reason I don't want to visit.Used to walk to school & snow would be to my waist.Back of schoolyd was beginning of woods(we were at Ft.Richardson).Man you could walk out in the woods & the "only" sound you would hear would be branches cracking becase of temp.inversion. Man,we would walk a block wait for the water to freeze so we could skate on the lake.It was like living back in time,1800's.Moose would come on the schoolyd, woods & I mean "woods"were right there. You could go an hr out & it was great, shoot any gun you had & no one bothered you or said anything except, can I shoot it!! "You "can only imagine, people tell me Alaska is so wild now,"I laugh"!
THE DUCK!

Sweet, oh so sweet.:D A friend of mine years ago was left a .50 caliber Sharps, an old one, by his grandfather.

Trouble was it had been a rifle at one time and someone had cut the barrel off to make it into a carbine. Pure dee sickening it was.:(
That rolling block makes a sound like no other.:D

Runs, what would you use an 1894 in .357 for?

I've got one and really like it although it's been a while since it was taken out.
My guns are in a helluva shape and hopefully when Munk comes to visit we can get them cleaned up again for a while.;) :)
I bought new line and a new reel last year and my rigs are still setting in the corner where they live. The new upside down Zebco 33 has made it out of the drawer though.:D
I wore out my old Zebco 44 after many years of happy service.:(
I need to start fishin again anyway.:D

I dunno. I'll get the gun first, and then find a way to justify it. :D

I can tell you that I have about a billion rounds of .357 brass and bullets floating around, that could use shot up, the S&W 586 My grandfather left me needs a friend, and my wife has horrible bursitis in her shoulder, and carpal tunnel going on, thereby making rifles with any kinda recoil or weight a bad idea. I think she could put it to good use as a house gun.

I had one as a kid, loved that thing to pieces. Miss it terribly. Accurate, smooth, reliable, easy to carry. It's first five shots killed three white tail deer. the first two were to sight it in. :D One thing I particularly like about the .357 rifles is that you can really get alot velocity out of them than in the handgun. The .357 seems to gain alot more muzzle burn when fired out of a rifle than other pistol calibers.

I think it's a very wise choice for folks who just want a decent carbine with readily available ammunition, and don't have a walk in safe to stash nine dozen guns in, Especially in the lower 48.

But...I digress...when I finish justifying it I'll git back witcha.... :D
