Father's Day is coming up.
My old man has always loved a Case, yellow handle, three blade (I guess the technical name for it is "Stockman").
The sad part is, this TruSharp stuff they use now is crap.

My question is, is there a knife company left that makes a pretty stockman in carbon or something with an edge holding capability for around 50-75 bucks? Something trustworthy that a man can use and not worry about it being junk or losing its edge after two minutes worth of hard use.

As a wilderness survival instructor I know what I want in a knife, but it's a different kind of beast when it's for a cowboy who uses his knife for everything from seagrass rope and feed sacks to whittling, to cutting odds and ends.

The help is much appreciated.

If your dad's up to sharpening D2 (or if his son wanted to help:D), Queen has a very nice amber bone offering in D2 in your price range.

Stockmans

Queen has in D2 in 3 1/4", 4" and 4 1/4" == $50 to $55 (Bone or wood)
GEC has in carbon in 4 1/8" == $75 and up (Acrylic, bone and stag)
Case has in carbon in 3 1/4", 3 5/8" and 4 1/4" == $40 to $50 (yellow delrin or bone)
Boker has in carbon in 4" == $40 in bone

That should give you about 20 knives to choose from.
All good working knives

If you tell us what size you want, we can be even more specific

I'd recommend a CV Case stockman with bone handle, it's a quality knife, nice looking and well within your budget. If you get it from www.knifeworks.com you can get your dad's name laser etched on one of the blades for an extra $7.

My favourite is the amber bone large stockman:

If you want a different pattern, there's a pretty cool Case gift tin that includes a yellow trapper (with CV blades), Arkansas whetstone and belt pouch for under $50.

Hows about a new Case Chestnut Mini Trapper or Stockman with cv blades...
Very sweet looking knifes IMO, nicely priced too..
There have been some threads with quite a few pics of the Chestnut. Looks to me like something a cowboy would like.
I know there has been a lot of talk about SS vs. CV blades, and seems most prefer CV, but I really don't remember hearing anyone complain to much about the SS Case is using these days. If anything, it seems a lot of folks want the CV mainly for the patina.

ALL of these Case knives have CV (AKA carbon steel) blades.

Since you write that your pop has "has always loved a Case, yellow handle, three blade," I strongly suggest this classic.

Lastly, just wanted to say it's a damn nice thing you're doing for your dad. :thumbup:

I love Case, think they make a good knife. But if you are looking for yellow handle, pretty, good carbon steel... maybe consider moore maker knives. I know some guys on here think they are hit or miss, but i have owned several, and each one was very nice. You could get a yellow bone, jigged or smooth stockman in four different sizes. For about that price point, with 1095 carbon steel that I think is done well. Just a thought.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it very much. I'll probably end up going with the yellow handle Case in CV with his name cut into it.
I think he'd use that. Anything too fancy would just get "put up".
