Howard recently mentioned that this style is often disparaged (I had to go look to see what word he used and then look it up to see what it means) but I myself find it rather appealing.
One day I'll try one on for size and see how she swings.

Because of the blade or the handle?

Many of these are produced in India to the Indian military pattern. Blade quality including heat treat will vary considerably, as will handle quality. This variation is a major factor in their poor reputation.

I've always thought that the shape of the handle and the simplified handle ring made them easier to mass produce for military issue. Many of the ones that I've seen pictured on the internet have a crudely shaped ring, but the one above by Ram Kumar looks very nicely done. It's typical of HI that when they make a replica of a historical or vintage blade they make it more refined and more robust.

On the otherad, Howard mentioned that the handle could be a "hand ripper." What exactly was different about this handle and tang?

Looks awful similar to the M-43 I have, though I'm tempted.

The metal tang bumps outward at the central ring. If the wood pulls away from the metal sharp metal edges will contact the hand. It is possible some other HI offerings share this design.
