Father's day will be upon us in a little less than two weeks.

This isn't an official "father's day" post, but you can share a fond memory of your father. Nothing big, just something nice.

I used to hate my father. Like really, hate his guts. I used to think he was a cold callous man, and that he loved no one and that nothing made him happy. One day I reluctantly went to his house to help him build a fence and he showed me a tree he planted. It was an apple tree of his favorite kind of apple, Ashmead's Kernel. That tree and those apples made him so happy. This simple tree and how happy it made my dad showed me a whole other side to my father that I never saw before. My dad and I have a much better relationship now. I guess the simplest of things can really open your eyes.

I wish I had fond memories of my Father. Not a bad guy, but an alcoholic. Everybody who remembers him said he was the strongest man and the best mechanic they knew.

My strongest memory of him is waiting for him to show up on my birthday and he was a no show. Came by the next day with a .22 as a gift and said he was sorry but he forgot.

Lost his family, lost his farm, lost his friends. And THEN he stopped drinking--that's when I would have started. I wish there was a happy ending, but he died of cancer over 25 years ago when he was like 64. My Mother, who had divorced him 10-15 years earlier, ended up taking care of him as he was dying, so I guess they kind of made their peace.

I'm young and of this new generation of entitlement. Long story short, my dad pulled me out of school around 12 to start homeschooling. From 2004 to 2008 we built a log cabin from the ground up for the family (both parents still going strong and I'm the oldest of 6 kids - 23 years old now). I hated everyday working that hammer and nail but after it was all done, I could finally appreciate what he did for me and my brothers and sister. I'm married now, have an 11 month old son and a daughter due in August, on my way into the Air Force as a Firefighter, and I don't think I would be where I am now without my father but also my mother.

Happy early Father's Day to all the other dads out there past and present.
