Is it just me that keeps finding Fatwood and Jute in the pockets of all my outdoor gear or do you all do the same ?
I can't pass any fatwood without breaking a small piece off and stuffing it in my pocket thinking ' that might come in and will save me robbing some from my kit ', same thing with Jute I tend to stuff some in my pocket each time I go for a hike and then forget it's there !!!!!!

Please tell me I'm normal !!!!:o

I cant find any out here, so if you happen to have to much just feel free to send some my way.

Gee, pitdog, I wish I could .

JK, bro. That reminds me of the old woodsmen in this part of the world that would stuff a bit of Birch bark in their pockets, whenever they came across it, in case they would need it for fire making, or at least, so the stories go. Not a bad idea, though.

Normal is a relative term Pit, and quite frankly, if you ask my opinion, it is waaaay over-rated.

Are you normal in the over-all sense of normal? ....I'd have to say no.

Are you normal in the sense of being a normal woodsman/bushcrafter/survival skills enthusiast/ B.F. member? ...yes, or a maybe even a step ahead depending on how you look at it.

I can't identify with you on the jute as i haven't even found it here yet but i am just now studying flint and steel and the other "primitive" methods. However I can easily see your bits of fatwood and raise you several large chunks even. I use it for teaching classes, for fire starting in my fire pit, and I always end up keeping my brother's hearth stocked. I can seldom pass up carrying however much I am willing to hump back to the truck or find on the sides of roads. I have chunks of it on my front porch, on my back porch, out back by the fire pit, and there is almost always a hunk in the bed of my truck but at the moment there are three. I have small pieces of it in different bags and kits in the house and in both vehicles, some on top of the fridge, and some sitting here on my desk. And yes I find it in my pockets all the time. It's ok though...from what I see of the normal world...I honestly don't mind being abnormal.

My neighbors often ask what that nasty looking old wood on my porch is. In a West LA condo building I guess folks just don't understand that when you encounter a great fatwood supply, you simply MUST collect it!

So at least I think you are normal.

You are totally normal... in this group of weirdo's.

I keep finding little dumb things in my pockets - like a zipper pull/whistle, or a toggle for bungy cord.

I keep hoping I'm going to pull a $20 bill out of my pocket, turns out its a wad of dryer lint :(

Oh yeah!?!, have ya knitted jute into a washcloth/pot holder yet?

Don't worry your normal "o)

The only "normal I can rely on is the one between rapid and intensive on my dishwasher.

My wife keeps asking when I'm going to do something with the giant Pine stump in our front yard. I still haven't told her I'm going to let it sit there until it turns to fatwood :D

You're a brave man. Is the fatwood worth the hell storm for not doing your honey-do list?:D

Hey as long as thats not the only thing on the honey-do list, he should be "golden".... I hope;)...

I always have jute with me, not fatwood, can't find the stuff.

So, I think you are normal .. in a group of people who are the furthest from normal.

I would say on the normal scale you are somewhere between this

kgd,

I tried to start a fire using a fire drill and some drier lint on a backpacking trip a couple weeks ago. We discovered that I must be laundering asbestos underwear because the damn drier lint was even hard to light with a Bic. I just harvested a fresh batch after drying some non-asbestos towels (cotton) and I'll be interested to see how it works. It's performed well for me in the past but that last stuff must have absorbed moisture somehow---I don't know.

I used to be compulsive about removing the lint from the front pocket of my jeans after laundering, until one damp day I used some as tinder. Now I leave it in the pockets for emergencies.
I edc a Leatherman Surge and have a GoingGear mischmetal rod tucked in the side. I should find a space to put some jute in there.
