Just wrote an article about fatwood that includes a section on using as a candle. Thought most folks would be especially interested, so posting that here. While I have seen videos and more on the solution, most just light the end of a piece of lighter'd or do a little split. Hadn't seen anyone do it by quartering the end and adding two spacers which appears to be the most efficient. Learned this particular method from Mark Warren of the Medicine Bow Primitive School. Pics are self-explanatory...
