I have a LMF and striker on my keychain and today I just made a little pendant sized piece of fatwood, sanded the corners and smoothed it out.

Then I got to thinking. If somebody had skill at these things (which I do not), they could make little fatwood pendants about the size and shape of dog tags. If they had some kind of design on the interior that would be cool too. You could wear this thing around like jewelery but having a piece of fatwood on your person.

Then when times are down, like when you are in hour 2 of what supposed to be a 1 h meeting, you pullout your pendent, sniff that pine scent, and thinking about burning all your colleagues alive....

Anyhow, I thought this might be a cool idea for any of those entrapeneur/carvers out there. Anyone want to give this a shot?

p.s. I partly stole this idea from Ragner who used to have the viking pendants which where small pieces of stone that could be used for sharpening.

That would be a pretty cool idea. Or like a the shell type necklace with small beads made of smooth fatwood. Which would give you a lot of pieces of it so it could be used many times before it was all gone.

Great idea with the beads mike. Didn't think of the knife lanyard bit but that works!

BTW - on mine, I rubbed a thin film of mineral oil and rubbed it on the pendant and this removed some of the tackiness of it. Here is my little keychain one. Again not very spectacular, but it is there if I need it.

I just came out of the forest with my first piece of fatwood. Finally found some that I could harvest with a minimum of work. (my dog is very impatient when we're not moving)
Already tried it out as tinder, works great! I'll make me a pendant this evening and practice some more with the firesteel.

BTW, does anyone know how I get the saw of my SAK Farmer and the blade of my Mora clean again? :D

Nail polish remover should do the trick. Give it a good soak (~1 hour or so). Only dip in the blade though, not the plastic parts of the handle.

Hot water and a scrubbing brush works for mine !!!

cool Beans... I'm in the process of trying to make a stone socket pendant for my bowdrill Might be cool to have a few fatwood beads on there, and make a real tribal necklace out of it...If I start wearing that I might have to go to the attic and try to dig out my bong though LOL

That looks really good. Now I'd start batoning it into 1/4" or slightly larger slices and place one or two of those slices into your PSK or firekit.

Best idea I have heard of in a while. I carry fatwood in my kit. How about making a Kubaton for your keychain or small flashlight and putting a point on one end. Double duty, fire and protection. Loosearrow
