Hi guys -
At The Gathering, I mentioned to a few of you that I thought I had made some fatwood, and so I have taken some of it for your perusal.
To remind you, I have several pine trees on my property, and I trimmed one of my trees so that I could more easily mow under the tree.
When I trimmed the branches, I left a few inches of the branch on the trunk of the tree to see what would happen.
I did the trimming last fall, and today I cut the "nub" off of the tree and then split that little nub up with my JK Survival Knife.
Here is a picture of the split pieces - does this look like fatwood? It is very sticky and smells of pine, and it has a waxy look to it.
I'll try to start a fire with it later this week.
I think it would be better if I had left it for another year or more. I'll experiment - I don't need much fatwood, but it would be nice to be able to "make" your own.
best regards -
