Fatwood question?

I found a nice piece of fatwood a couple weeks ago and cut it into some smaller chunks about 4in by 2in by 1in thick, then split those into twigs, now a couple weeks later they seem to have lost their strong smell, will they still be fine or do they have a short life after you split them down?

If it is good fatwood, they will be fine for a Loooong time.

You just might not smell it as strongly because the surface has aired out a bit.

Try to scrape the surface a little bit and you should smell it again. Good quality fatwood will keep for long and dry out only on the surface.

I'll add: don't split it down any more. I found that out many years ago, took some of it and split it into matchstick-sized pieces for my kit, when I went back later to use it, it had dried out to strong pine slivers! Now I just leave it in as big a chunks as I find it, then shave off as I need it.

Thanks, I'll leave it alone till I need next time, though I could find ten pounds every day in these woods around here.

The wife showed me something interesting earlier. There is a "Fatwood Gift Crate" in the L L Bean Christmas catalog. It's a nice looking crate made of what appears to be stained solid wood. It doesn't give size dimensions just says 10 pounds. I want to get one to give to my brother for Christmas so after he uses it he'll have a box to set on the side hearth to store the fatwood I give him. I may even empty it and fill it with the natural fatwood I usually take him.

To anyone who might know the answer.

Has anyone tested how well fatwood stores in a ziplock bag that's put in a fridge / freezer (bear in mind where I live summer temps are hot and the air is dry).

Thanks in advance

Kind regards
Mick

Well...never put any in the freezer, but i have some loose in a pack that has been there for a few years. I used some of it to demonstrate using a firesteel a couple of weeks ago...worked fine. There are small hunks laying around my fire pit out back that have been there as long or longer that I'll use some of when I want and it works as good as ever. From what I've seen the good stuff requires very little in the way of special care.

I get my fatwood at Lowe's. I've had a box for a year now and it will likely last the rest of my life. I think it was $7.

Hard to find native fatwood in the high desert.
