I ordered direct from cold steel a vietnam tomahawk. it was advertised as having an edge on the bottom side of the blade (near the handle). Well my hawk is ground flat on that edge and the only edge i have on it is the front blade edge and the spike.

Can somone who has one tell me if theirs has this second edge or if this feature is only on an older model. I havnt botherd writting to cold steel because they take forever to reply and i wanted to research first.

My hawk is freshly painted but on close examination looks very rushed in production and i do feel like i have a inferior product.

Thanks

You may want to ask Cold Steel, instead of American Tomahawk Company. The Cold Steel hawk is an un-authorized reproduction of the ATC product.

:D Just needed a minor correction.

Just goes to show, you get what you pay for....

Thanks,i didnt realize that. I have bought a few hawks fron CS and a few have ATC stickers on them (cold steel Rifleman and frontier hawks-are they ripoffs too??)

Yes. Amazing what some people will do, huh?

CS hawks sucks! believe me you was lucky to have an edge on the main blade! most of them I've handled didn't even had edge!
Take a Vietnam hawk from ATC in your hand and believe me you will feel THE difference...;)
again...can't compare a Hummer and a yugo...

Are you sure? I could have sworn I bought my CS hawk before ATC started making them. I searched high and low and the only ones I could find being produced at the time were the CS and some really cheap version that I still see for sale in Brigade Quartermaster.

I realize CS doesn't have Mr Lagana's permission, but I think they beat ATC to the market. I still like the ATC product better, but it wasn't around that I could find when I bought the CS.

EDIT: to answer the original question -- no, the underside of the hawk wasn't sharpened from CS.

Cold Steel began applying an "American Tomahawk Company" label on ALL of their Tomahawks in April of 2002, as a direct result of a dispute that emerged between CS and ATC about the ownership of the name, "American Tomahawk Company".

Apparently, Cold Steel applied for the trademark, "American Tomahawk Company" in 1993, and it was issued on the supplemental register. They never used it until we were in business for over a year. We were totally unaware that Cold Steel had a registered mark, "American Tomahawk Company".

Mr. Thompson and I have been in communication about this subject for over a year, and a tenative agreement has been reached. The labels in question nonetheless, will probably be on their Tomahawks through the end of the year.

They began manufacturing a Vietnam Tomahawk replica in 1993, using imported drop forgings and American hickory handles. Reportedly, the dies used to make these forgings were created by using an original Vietnam Tomahawk head, loaned to Cold Steel by Steve Dick of Tactical Knives. While I do not dispute the truthfulness of this report, the fact is that the end result, the Tomahawk itself, while cosmetically VERY similar to the original Vietnam Tomahawk, does NOT meet Peter's specifications.

The piece is too thick, too heavy, and does not have his "hourglass" eye design, which we improved to a step-lock design.

Cold Steel will continue to make their Vietnam Tomahawk version, with ATC's permission, as it was indeed in the market since 93'. However, as some of the remarks have already stated, the customer indeed "gets what he pays for"...

While we seldom manufacture this model with a hickory handle any more, the Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk, with its synthetic handle, is a completely improved 21st century piece while keeping to Mr. LaGana's original specifications in dimension and weight...we also sharpen ALL FIVE edges of the Vietnam Tactical, which is something that was never done before. In fact, "Pete" would often yell at me, "that thing is TOO DAMN SHARP!!". ;) And he meant it...thank goodness he lived 400 miles from the office!

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the education. I never realized they were in competition for the name. I guess copywrite lawyers are sitting on some fat wallets huh? I agree wholeheartedly that your product is superior. When I first ordered the CS hawk I was immediately disappointed to see "Made in Taiwan" on the head.

Keep up the great work.

I would LOVE to have an ATC 'Hawk, but being that I'm dirt poor, the Cold Steel version is all that I could possibly afford...Sad, huh?.:(.

As an update; I now DO have the Cold Steel version of the Vietnam Tomahawk, and now, more than ever, I KNOW that I NEED one of the new ATC Tactical Lagana Tactical models. I'd be afraid to toss this Cold Steel version at anything for fear that it would fly apart if it hit anything, and it was as dull as a tennis ball when I received it.

I recently made a trade for one of the (DC'd) ATC Light Infantry Ranger Hawks, (that I should receive on Monday), but from what Andy told me on the phone is that this model is too heavy* to use as either a throwing 'Hawk or as a "combat Hawk", so it looks like I'm "stuck" with this Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk for awhile...At least 'till I get my mitts on an ATC Lagana Tactical Vietnam Tomahawk.

*I wonder if it would help much if I cut about 4 inches off the handle?

As another update, I received the ATC Light Infantry Roger's Rangers Hawk today, and the word "Light" in its' name isn't correct, as it IS a heavy 'Hawk!...(This is the one with the poll, rather than the spike). It's a VERY well-made 'Hawk (and is my 1st REAL 'Hawk), but unless I grow a BIG arm like "Arnold's" (the "Terminator"), this is totally a two-handed tomahawk.:D.
