Only stipulation is...it has to be a Buck
! I lean towards a stockman,don't have a whittler(yet)! I know some of ya'll have both...
which do you favor & why?
Thanks,
Jim

Well, I have a buck stockman, and I've found I'm not particularly fond of that pattern. I don't have a whittler, though I'd like to get my hands on one, but I do have a companion, which is the same only without the third blade, and I do like that one. It's a bit smaller than the knives I normally carry, but I definitely prefer it over the stockman. Maybe it's because the stockman is too wide, maybe it's the way you have to open on of the blades on the opposite side (just feels awkward)...

I like a Buck 301 or a Buck 303 for pocket carry. I own a Buck 310 Whittler, but I find it and the 309 too small for my preference. OH

My favorite for 35 years or so has been the 303. The other stockman models are a bit large for pocket carry and the 303 will do any thing I need.

Don't you guys feel were talking about what size works best for each of us ? And that will depend on how we use our knife. I consider that rougher work needs a little larger knife, also folks with large hands like the grip a large knife has. The OP was asking about the Whittler, I would call a Whittler a 'Special' tool. A small knife set up for whittling. Without me looking back, does anyone know if it was the knife that once was offered by Buck in a package with a couple blocks of wood. The third blade added to the 309 frame was considered to be attractive to 'whittlers", am I right. Size wise I consider a 309 as a Sunday knife. The little 305 I always envisioned being a vest pocket knife. I carried a 303 'wedged' in jeans watch pocket for many years. And like Bert it just seems normal to use. Me personally, never hooked up with a 301 for some reason, but many call it their favorite everyday knife.. If I myself, wanted a bigger than a 303, I carried a 307 in a sheath or even went on to a 112. So, my recommendation to Jim is to get a 303 first and see how it suits you.......

Here is a quick grab of a photo to show size comparison of the 300 series knives mentioned, except the 307. These are discontinued scale types so don't get excited. But, it gives you a size comparison. Also the Whittler is discontinued as a model and you will have to search for it in places old knives lurk, where as the 303 is still in production in at least two handle scale types.

What's not to like about one of these current models. Top to bottom in line: 301, 302, 303. Left: 309 back, Right: 305

I have a couple of 303s and one 301. I really enjoy using and handling my 301, but I do prefer carrying the 303 in my pocket. I like to think I need the larger knife but the truth is the 303 is more than capable of handling my daily cutting needs.
I always kind of wante a 310 Whittler. Maybe I will run across one someday.

I EDC a Buck 110 and 389 Canoe.
Thinking of getting a 301 to rotate with the 389.

Buck 309 Whittler (there is also a 310 Whittler which looks identical). OH

OH,

They are actually both considered 310s. At the end of production, 310 stamped blades ran out and someone said 'Oh well, just put in 309 blades, we have lots of those.' So, what you got is a model 310 whittler with a 309 blade. Buck dropped them from catalog but SMKWs continued to sell them hence the 309 blades. I call these with 309 blades, a variation of the model 310. Its all chicken but the bill.

Good info to know 300Bucks - thank you! This one was a gift from a Dad and his two sons that I taught to shoot and deer hunt. Actually they gave me a Bass Pro gift card as a thank-you and the Buck is what I bought (naturally!) It came in a nice little box made of some foreign (I assume Asian) wood. OH

Here is photo of the box with a 310 marked main blade in it.

Here is photo of a group of 310 Whittlers with a main blade marked 309 on bottom.

Even neater are two pages from a SMKWs catalog, from Chuck Reeds collection, of 310 advert. Read where it says high carbon steel.
Well, guess no one is perfect.

Here is whole page for you details people... why didn't I buy 2 dozen each back in 96, oh yah, I didn't have the money.

I like the Stockman more, the small 303 in yellow is a handy pocket-knife and I'd hate to lose it. Well made, good finish and an honest knife that inspires respect as a tool.

However, what has really surprised me is the present I gave myself last Christmas, the single-blade solitaire. I got this as a 2nd but I can't find anything wrong with it and I'm a hard taskmaster. It's hard to get these knives here in Europe but I got one from the Bay in the US at a very good price and with reasonable delivery costs. Kind of single Stockman if you like! Just wish I could get a yellow handled one too.

Will looks like the only stockmen in the current catalog are black delrin and brass/rosewood. You better grab the first yellow you run on to........I think they melted them down to make the froes.

Bought the 301 Stockman. It has displaced the 389 from my pocket for a spell.
I really like this knife.
