Who are among your favorite master and journeymen smiths? Categorizing might be interesting, i.e, bowies, hunters, fighters, engraved knives, damascus, up-and-comers, sharpest, best users, most under-rated, most beautiful, etc.

Don Hastings MS (deceased) 1st damascus piece owned was from him.
Jim Crowell MS
Timothy Potier MS Never see much of his work on the net, but his fit and finish is second to none.
Jay Hendrickson MS
A.G. Barnes MS Under rated in my opinion.

Bill Moran, Jerry Fisk, Jim Crowell, Harvey Dean, Jay Hendrickson, Mark Sentz, Robbin Hudson, Charlie Ochs, Jim Walker, J.R. Cook, Don Hanson, Jack Fuller, Joe Flournoy, Barney Barnes, Larry Harley, Steve Schwarzer, Chris Marks, Ray Kirk, Dickie Robinson, Lin Rhea, John White, P.J. Tomes, Craig Camerer, John Perry, Ed Caffrey, Kevin Cashen, Bruce Bump, Rik Palm, Jerome Anders, Joe Keeslar, Steve Dunn,.....and the list goes on.:D I knew where to start, of course.....Mr. Moran, but where do you stop with over 100 Master Smiths and 1300+ members all of them doing better work than me? :D

Excellent choices. I thought Tim Poitier has vanished from the face of the earth, but he was a demonstrator at Batsons.
I agree about Barney. I bought an unusual knife from him at Blade '05......a small ST 24 shaped blade with a sculpted stainless guard and a stag handle.

For me: Don Hanson, Daniel Winkler, Bailey Bradshaw, Joe Flournoy, Ed Caffrey are my top 5 that I can think of..

Yeah, was wondering what happened to Tim... Havent talked to him for a few years, you dont see much of his knives around as hes always been part time, his fit and finish is really top notch, even for a "plain jane" using knife.
Another ABS guy that I like is Hugh Bartug from Ashley Forge. Made excellent damascus pieces, its a pity he retired quite a while back.

Christoph Deringer

I love his integral work and I have to put a plug in for a fellow canuck.

Steve Dunn

His damascus and engraving are amazing.

Kevin Cashen and Ed Fowler

For working as hard on the process as the presentation (and giving the new guys some tips and education)

The makers that I appreciate the most are the ones who do things that I haven't figured out yet - it gives me something to work towards.

Tai Goo = no ABS credits... :(

We had a LONG thread over on the Outpost at KNet (Tai's usual hangout) about the ABS. Tai supports the ABS members, but does not feel he needs the credentials, so he remains distant. My guess is he could walk through the tests if needed.

Tai just seems content to do his own strange, eccentric thing and most of us just sit back in amazement every time we see one of his new projects. But then again, the "wizards" and "mad scientists" of this game are always the most interesting folks and you are usually guaranteed not only to be entertained but to learn some rather important things from them. :D

Joe, I would sure like to see some of your work. You are always jokingly cutting down your knives. I would bet you are pulling the "old pool room hustle" on us, and actually your work is quite good and you would fit in a couple categories above.

I saw some of Joe's work at Batson's and it looked pretty damn good to me. His picture taking on the other hand is....well.... not so good :o
