Favorite catalog-configuration knife?

Considering the catalog configurations, which is what you would get if you specified no options, what is everyone's favorite Randall? For me, it'd probably be the #27. I am really fond of the 13-spacer configuration with red Micarta sections, stag handle, and 1/16-inch butt plate. My second choice would be the #16.

If I had to go with a "no-option" knife, the 27 would be a pretty good choice. The 25-5 ain't too shabby either.

Catalog, with options? Model #25 for sure. Non-catalog; the Combat Companion--I've had a half dozen with seven options, a few less with eight, and a couple with nine...really nice stuff when done right!

The first Randall to pique my interest, in the early 1980s when I was a teenager, was the #24 "Guardian." I finally bought one last October. It is in catalog configuration, and a favorite:

(I shared these #24 snapshots with my dad, and I had to tell him that it has a Black Stag handle. ;) )

Oh my God - you lied to your Dad??? That does it, you're going to burn in Hell for all eternity.

(Of course, I never did that. Nope, not even once. Ahem.)

Well, when I sent the photos to my dad, he replied:

That's the plainest Stag I've ever seen.

Keep in mind that his definition of a knife handle is that it is made out of stag or stag, and if stag is not available, then stag is an acceptable substitute. I simplified the state of the world by simply stating that it is Black Stag, which happens to look a lot like Black Micarta. Think "Alternative Ivory," but in the reverse sense. ;)

I've got to say I mostly agree with him there - I'm a pretty big stag fan myself (and not much of a Micarta person). I own exactly one knife in Micarta (a Buxton Fighter), and only because it's not available in anything else.

Interesting question, though: I wonder if Masecraft makes black AI. That could present some interesting possibilities.

My pick is the RMK #1. Not only is this pick is attributed to sentimental reasons, but the #1 is a sweet blade. The RMK #1 is the knife that got me into knives. My dad gave me a RMK #1 when I was 14. And so the obsession begins.

Not your base RMK catalogue but my newest #1 and #2 with forward curved nickel/silver hilt, desert ironwood commando grips, duraluminum butt cap, both with 8" blades...

KL,

'His definition of a knife handle is that it is made out of stag or stag, and if stag is not available, then stag is an acceptable substitute...' has got to be the funniest thing I've read yet this week! :D

Sounds you and dad have it going on...good on ya!

A 25-6? Interesting. Most people would go for the five-incher. I've never actually held a 6" in my hands - what makes it more attractive to you than the 5?

Jeff,

The #25-6 is a completely different animal--a much larger knife overall; IMO, it should actually be different model. If you have a five inch version and would like to compare the two, shoot me your mailing address and I'll send you mine.

I'm going to sell it soon anyway and if you like it, I'd rather it go to a good home than end up 'on the streets'. That said, I've seen a dozen and owned three #25-6's; this one is the nicest I've ever seen or owned. SS/NS/killer stag...

Shel:

It sounds exactly like the one I've had on order for lo these many years now. Sure, if you don't mind parting with it for a week or two, I'd love to check it out. I'll e-mail ya.

I have two of the five-inchers (N/S and brass), but no 6" 25s as of yet. I'll be curious to check it out. Am also still curious to read Bruce's comments about why he prefers it.

I have a #25-6" on order that will have a stainless steel blade, pure silver furniture (single hilt and butt cap), wrist thong, and an Alternative Ivory handle insert (between the stacked leather ends).

I am expecting it to be ready this November or so.

Ken, that sounds mighty nice. Knowing you, I probably don't need to remind you to show us pictures.

I liked the 25-6 because it is a large knife. It's style and the reflectivity of it's furniture didn't make it appropriate as an Army combat knife so I carried a #1 or a #14 but it made a good "larger" knife for big game hunting. I feel the 25-5 is too large to skin with so I carry a smaller skinning knife anyway. I've skinned deer with a swiss army knife before so don't feel a large knife is necessary for that task. I guess what I'm rambling on about is that the 25-5 isn't suitable as an "only" woods knife so I went to the 25-6 and a smaller skinning knife, more on the lines of the 10-3 with the drop point.
