I was able to maximize the poll choices! Like I said this is for fun! EDC, Survival, Tactical, Self defense, hunting, what ever you use a fixes blade for! Post pics, be nice and let's talk knives!

And again, I did not vote.

Like all things knife-related, there are specific blades I use for specific tasks. Therefore, my favorite blade length is anywhere from 3" to 13".

If you want meaningful results, you need to be more specific in the parameters. My favorite blade length for hunting is definitely not my favorite length for SD. Just as my EDC length is far shorter than my "survival" knives.

I voted 5-6" again.

I don't edc a fixed blade. I don't carry one for SD. My only purpose for a fixed blade is when I camp/hike and I admittedly don't go to far off the beaten path nowadays. If I had to build one fixed blade to serve me the rest of my life, it would have a blade length of 5.25"-5.5". That is ideal for me in my experience. YMMV.

Mostly it's just for fun. See what people like. I have different sizes myself. Just if someone has a favorite or preferred fix blade and they want share. I see alot of cool new companies that I have never heard of.

I saw the first thread was closed, and before I got to the last page, I was barely containing the suspense of wondering what sort of train wreck took place. Pleasantly surprised haha

Well 3.75" is "just about 4", which is my preferred EDC.

I always prefer a bigger knife. The added length can make it a more effective cutting (more edge)and chopping (greater momentum) tool, and the added length can be a plus if you are dealing with bramble. They are heavier, but it is really a small amount of weight on the grand scheme of things. Just leave some of the booze home and you’ll be fine with the weight.

if I do carry a fixed blade it is for small EDC jobs, around work and home, but want to horizontal carry more to see if my small fixed blades can be practical enough to take the place of my pocket knife. I picked this length as the one I have the most of, some of my favorites are my JKs and I have a Dave Ferry Sonoran belt knife dying to be carried. If I go camping or hiking, i like the 4-5 inch range.

When I carry fixed blades, I mostly carry them in a pocket. OAL means more to me than blade length. Six to seven inches overall is about right, which means blades 2.5-3.5”.

I didn't cast a vote as my "favorite" fixed blades are which ever ones I'm packing that day. What I carry is based on what I'm doing. I carry a minimum 2 folders and 2 fixed blades every day.

Today was Sunday, so the initial fixed blade selection was a pair of Western F48Bs and a BK-11 for church and dinner out. That was 3 in the 3" to 4" range. This afternoon, that shifted to a Kabar shortie (5"), a Kabar 1211 (7") , and a machete (17") for working around the barns.

Tomorrow, since I'll be taking my mother to her PT appointment, I'll probably pack a 1941 Western L48 and a 1941 48BG with blue/seafoam handles simply because they are my two "newest to me" Westerns, both about 4" long, along with the BK-11 or BK-13, which is 3" to 4".

Tuesday, I'll be packing a pair of Kabar shorties (both 5") and the BK-11 or BK-13. Working pastures and fence lines later this week will probably have me packing a 17" machete, a BK-21 (13.5") and a 7" Kabar 1217, and most like one of the BK neckers.

With the last round of knife law changes, I no longer have to worry about legalities with respect to the blade lengths. so I am free to carry whatever length knives I need for the tasks that day.

Only on extremely rare occassions do I get to choose which sword, saber or bayonet to carry.

Voted for the 6"-7" range. For smaller knives I use folders and for a fixed blade 6" to 7" handles just right.

I searched for a title on a Western F48B and didn't find a thread. Do you have any photos?

Found this:

I don't think there is a thread with F48B in the title.

Here's a post of a 1967 - 1972 F48B - guard stamped model number and Boulder still referenced in the ricasso stamp.

And this thread in the for sale forum shows the 1959 to 1967 version - model number is on the pile side ricasso, and the blade is slightly narrower and the handle has a smallerdiameter.

And here is a post I made of a 1956 ad for the BB linewhen it was first introduced,
