ok, mine is tanzanite. It's far too soft (6+ hardness) for a knife. still. In terms of sheer beauty, what is your favorite gem and color.

suprised to be the first.. but I'd have to go with the Opal... saw a couple of black opals years ago and have been ga-ga over 'em ever since...
 
Sapphire here. Got my g/f a beautiful violet-blue sapphire ring. (well, I'm still paying on it, but still)
 
My wife shares my disinterest in diamonds, so I got her a deep blue sapphire in her engagement ring. Sapphires are easily my favorite stones.

Both sapphires and rubies. Plenty hard for a knife also, but not sure about the toughness. Actually with the laser industry figuring out how to make synthetic rubies with virtually no flaws, a piece big enough for a small blade would probably cost little more than many of the more exotic steels and other alloys. Ruby slippers would still be rather costly for all but the most petite footed, wonder what it would take to make one of those neat little keyring blades or something? Of course it would probably be grounds for concealed weapon or some such charge in some jurisdictions since it would be a non-metalic blade and rather hard to detect...
 
Ruby...My "birthstone"...I've seen a couple that "knocked my socks off".:).
