I'm ordering the H&B Forge Goshawk and am trying to choose a nice knife to carry with it when backpacking, fishing, hunting etc... . What do you all like to carry?

If I'm not going too far (on foot) I'll take my rehandled Norlund HB hatchet and a home-made Kephart. If it's a longer hike and aesthetics give way to practicality, I'll take a Fiskars hatchet and a Mora Companion. If I'm leaving the hawks and hatchets at home but I still plan on making a fire on my hike I'll take my Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, which I can beat on and otherwise treat terribly in the process of making firewood and it doesn't seem to be the worse for.

Those are some great combos. I've been thinking of getting a Companion and a Terävä Jääkäripuukko. Now I have more confidence in those choices. I'll have to check out the Kephart, not familiar with that one.

Kephart is named for the gentleman (Horace Kephart) who espoused that particular pattern. You can buy a Kephart pattern for $60 from Condor tools or form a number of other places going into to the hundreds of dollars. Essentially it is a simple design with about a 4.5 inch fixed spearpoint blade, 1 inch or so wide with a handle about the same length as the blade for general purpose camp/ bushcraft use. Mine is on the heavy side and a bit wider than typical.

My most used go-to woods combo over the last few years. The hawk is a custom from Park Swan. Differentially heat treated S7 steel with full-length 1” micarta handle, and red liners. I use it almost daily to rough out woodcarving projects, but in the woods it does a great job procuring firewood.

The knife is a custom from Jakub Golla’s shop, Gollik Knives. It’s got a 6.5” blade of 0.25” thick Sleipner steel, with a flat grind. The handle is G10 with red liners.
