I know it's (at least partially) a matter of personan taste, but which is Your personal favorite among the knife-magazines?

Risking succumbing to the tactical trand, I must admit I like Tactical Knives (with which I am in no way affiliated) the best. I wish it would come out more often though.

Best wishes, Staba-san

I agree, I like Tactical Knives. I'm a bit disappointed in the Blades magazine. The entire problem with both of them is when they critique new products from the manufacturers. Seems like some of those tests are "wimpy". As a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever read in any of the print magazines a derogatory review. Every review appears upbeat, but I haven't seen any that says, they are overrated for the cost, overrated for the purpose intended, etc.. Did you ever notice that those guys that review the knives have possession of them for 6 months or more and all they can write about is shaving fuzz sticks and sticking or slicing homemade manikins? What do they do with those knives they have tested? Some say they return them to the manufacturer or distributer when finished, but more of the articles just don't say what they do with them. Maybe they all give them to the same guy that goes to South America who in turn gives them to the poor natives! Are we really getting balanced reporting in those print magazines?

I read TK and KI but, I subscribe to Blade.
For me it's the most well rounded in content and information, I'm really not into "tactical" and the "Hi-end" stuff for me is really just nice to look at. I do learn something new from each of these magazines but, it's nothing compared to the education I've received from being a Member here at the Forums.

Anyone else noticed that they all seem to test the same knives the same month? Is it an accident if Tactical Knives and Knives Illustrated both do a Microtech-SOCOM-story the same month, even though the knife hardly can be called new?

I also wondered about getting free knives, going to South-America, comparing 300$ bowies with 5$ manchetes and then finally giving away the 300$ knives to the poor natives (Who'll destroy them in 10 minutes by poking them into fire, and slapping tree-trunks)

Hi PhilL,

I agree in that the forums have given a lot - a lot more than the magazines. I also agree that the magazines are very nice to look at (although looking at the magazines can become quite expensive)

One of the most interesting columns in Blade magazine is the "how to section". IMHO, should be more of this. Knives Illustrated is a great magazine because it primarily focuses on the independent maker and their products. A great forum that needs expansion. A lot of great ideas come from the independent maker--ask Kershaw.

I subscribe to Blade Magazine and look forward to it's arrival each month. My wife and I really enjoy Ed Fowler's column, he is a superb wordsmith as well as bladesmith. I also subscribe to Knifeworld. It is a very informative "newspaper". I have read several issues of Knives Illustrated and Tactical Knives. They are good magazines too but my first choice is Blade.

KnifeWorld.
If you have any interest in traditional cutlery KnifeWorld is the one you can't be without. All else any of them will do the only difference is they have different names.

I read Blade, Knives Illustrated, and Knife World every month. I think they're all complementary. My favorite writer in any publication is Ed Fowler. His columns in Blade are excellant, informative, and full of insight. For interactivity, comedy and fun, and a wealth of great information, BladeForums can't be beat.

As for bias, everything you read has some sort of bias. This is true of all of the knife rags, and this forum. It's up to each of us readers to get what we can out of the information presented, and toss the garbage.

I subscribe to BLADE, seems to be less of the Black ops tactical ninja juvenilia than some of the other mags I've seen. The truth of the matter as far as reviews goes is that the mags have to make a compromise editorially; NO BAD REVIEWS. Bad reviews are not nice, downers; people like sucess stories, and so do the advertisers. So, rather than publish fluffy, unethical reviews of bad products; to keep it happy, you simply don't use the bad ones. less than perfect situation, but pragmatically necessary.

I subscribe to both Tactical Knives and Blade.

I like the easy, relaxed style of TK. Unlike other magazines I have seen, TK offers something for the ordinary guy. It's not just for police, military and martial artists. TK really expands the definition of "tactical" beyond knife fighting. They have a good balance of production and custom knives on their pages and they test them in a variety of ways.

Blade is great for learning about the knife industry in general. Although I have been around knives for many years, Blade has introduced me to the world of handmade knives and taken me behind the scenes. Most of what they feature I will never be able to own but I love to look!

The "How-to" stuff gives me encouragement and ideas.

I am glad I haven't had to choose one over the other. It would be impossible!

For me each magazine serves a different pupose.

I subscribe to the following:

Blade Mag, Knives Illustrated, Knife World & 2 international knife mags. One from Japan & one from Germany. I can't read what they write, but some cool looking photos.

I would appreciate it if someone could email me the ph # or web site address to Tactical Knives. My email address is rcchopra@uai.org

Thanks,

Ric

My personal favorite id Tactical Knives. But like the title says, they mostly have tactical knives. I'm also interested in traditional knives, which they do have from time to time. Does anybody know of a knife magazine that have mostly traditional stuff? If you do could you please e-mail me with the name, I would really appreciate it! I also try to stay away from Blade because I feel that they have a very disorganized magazine.
THANK YOU!!!

Since Mr Steven Dick is reading this thread/forum could I request that you please talk to the layout people regarding breaking articles up? I hate reading the first page and then having to flip to page 75 for the rest! I, like most here, read every page of the entire magazine (including the ads) and flipping back and forth is annoying.

Tactical Knives. Steven Dick, editor, does a great job. Writers are not "armchair critics", but field experianced. And, the photography is superb.

I like Tactical Knives! They have a common sense viewpoint & do articles about knives that are affordable. I also like their sister publications: Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement & Combat Handguns.
