The more we continue to camp, I am drawn to whittling. Unfortunately, at this time, I don’t have a knife with a coping blade and I think they are great looking blades and I understand them to be useful when whittling.

What is your favorite knife that contains a coping blade? I have traditionally been a Case fan but looking for other options. Haven’t see a Cattaraugus with coping blade yet?

Please include approximate age of knife as well.

Thanks!

Ummm . . .What is a coping blade?

The obvious answer is a Camillus 72. I have a BoyScout edition that saw a lot of use in my youth.

Here are a couple broken worn knives I modified for whittling and one with original blades.

Note the coping blade made from a pen blade and the wharncliffe I found hiding in the clippoint master

Keep in mind straight edged blades tend to get worn tips. When this happens most people sharpen the edges. I have found it sometimes makes more sense to shorten the blade a little instead. Or a combination of both.

Thanks for the replies.
The Boker 280 is an attractive knife. I may set my sights on a German one of these.

The Schrade 804 has always felt right and is a good looking knife -

Random internet pic, but they're still easy enough to find in excellent to NOS shape.

They are beautiful knives, but they are a bit small. I carry a larger knife when camping. The Boker carving congress is a great knife, but hard to find. The standard boker Congress with two sheep's foot blades is easy to get, and sharpens quickly. Having multiple sharp blades is nice so when one dulls out, you can move to another.

If you want to splurge, the GEC Pocket Carver is great. No coping blade, but two carving blades that suit the same purpose.

I love the idea of whittling, but I never seem to have the time to get good at it. I wish you luck.

Good friend had an extra carver congress with tang stamps marked Germany. The badge is the circle with tree and shows “Tree Brand” on either side. Any thoughts on approximate age of this knife?

Here's a great example, made by the late Kit Carson, small Model 21. I carried a similar one for a few years, had a blade of S30V. This was Kit's favorite carry blade, too, he made a larger version, also.
