No accelerants... just a flint+steel or a knife + whatever you can find in the woods. How do you prefer to make fire?

P.S. itd be nice if you could include what you need for the method, how you set it up, etc. Thanks!

Rod and striker as my son demonstrates here...

For natural tinder just scrape your knife down a Ceder tree and get the fine bark shavings !!!

i cheat, i flick my bic.

and where can i buy a good ferro rods? i looked at the mag. fire starters and walmart and they were too thin and cheap.

ferro rod would be the easiest way :)
though flint and steel is very fun :D

no fire piston fans? are fire pistons even allowed

Fire pistons? What are those?

Ill look into getting one of those ferro rods.. they sound cool. Are there any ways to make a fire without anything you couldnt find yourself in the woods? The only one i know of is the bow-drill method, and that takes literally a half hour + AFTER make all the stuff and set it up.

FireSteel & Fatwood (Pitch wood) is my favorite method of starting a fire in the bush. My second is Bow & Drill. I love playing with different woods.

hand drill and fire plow... both as much fun as the bow drill :foot:

lightning and depending on location... bombardier beetles and molten lava?

Pour some liquid glycerine onto a little pile of potassium permangenate, wait about 30 seconds, and watch it spontaneously ignite...

...just kidding. It is a heckuva lot of fun to watch, though.

Hey Guys...

I have several favorite ways to make a fire...

Since I don't know how to use a firebow( If I did, that would be my favorite) I would have to say that a fire piston is one of my all time favorite methods...

As well as chemical. PPM and Sugar or AF.. That is also pretty cool....

After that it's magnifying glass,, flint and steel and my default go to is Firesteel with Fatwood or PCB's..

My six year old tried on the weekend with a Firesteel and a PCB, but couldn't get enough sparks to land on target...

Why would you be kidding....??

It for sure is a Very cool way to start a fire in the bush,, although I rather use sugar or powdered sugar and grind it into flames...

Very cool,, but Very quick burning..
You've gotta have your $hit together when it ignites...

Normark, my previous offer is open ended- if you're ever coming up through this way, and we can get together, give me an hour, and I'm sure you'll become , "A FIREMAKER". (How do you insert a drum roll? )

Oh, I just meant it wasn't my "favorite method to start a fire", per the thread title.

Ok, grinding sugar, thats a new one. Could anyone explain it, or is is really obvious, just gring suger, but in what? and how?

Blast Match or a Bic lighter

If I have enough time I will syphon the gasoline out of the broken down motorbike I am stranded with, using squirll intestines as a pipe and a broken headlight as a cup. Then I will pour the gasoline over my freshly collected belly button lint and use a fresnel lens to ingite the kindlin:cool:

Or I can stop pretending I have my own Survival show and just use the Bic like I said:o

A magnifying lens is a pretty cool way to start a fire. I have a bunch of really thin fresnel lenses I have stashed all over. One in my BOB, a credit card sized one in my wallet, etc. Not much good in the rain though.

One time I actually got a fire started by hitting two pieces of flint together. It would have been very cool if it didn't take almost an hour and several smashed fingers in the process. I was a very stubborn child.

You can't just grind the sugar.. (Or maybe Chuck Norris could!!)

Take a small pile (teaspoons sized, maybe a little bigger) of Potassium Permanganate and create a "well" in the top. It now resembles a mini-volcano. Pour about a teaspoon of pure sugar into the well, it's ok if it spills over.

Take a flat-ended stick about an inch in diameter, and place it against the pile. While applying alot of downward force, grind the two ingredients together. You are NOT trying to mix them, you are trying to GRIND them together. You will start to see smoke, keep going. All of a sudden, it will burst into flames. You're done! This is not an exact recipe... I just through the sizes and amounts out there for demo purposes only!

Interesting note: Potassium Permanganate can also be used to purify water, and since it's purple in color, it makes a GREAT emergency signal in the snow!
