I know the 21st century is only 9 yrs old. But that's still 9 yrs of movies.

Here are my faves:

28 Days Later (greatest horror movie ever?)
About Schmidt (interesting character study of a modern day curmudgeon)
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (best comedy EVER, with great music, someday it will get the love it deserves)
Donnie Darko (significantly flawed but incredibly ambitious plot, with great characters, subplots, and recurring motifs)
Grizzly Man (doc) (superbly riveting)
Kung Fu Hustle (hilarious and totally unique)
Napolean Dynamite (hilarious and totally unique, again)
Open Range (terrifically entertaining and underrated western)
Pan's Labyrinth (cool.....and disturbing)
There Will Be Blood (a modern American masterpiece with the greatest actor ever at the top of his form)
Dawn of the Dead remake (terrific entertainment value)
Michael Clayton (great story, great acting)
Children of Men (riveting and nearly flawless)
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (doc) (fascinating documentary of geekdom)
The Visitor (touching and wonderfully acted commentary-driven story)
The Machinist (should be in my top ten-- great film that pays attention to the details-- like Hitchcock)
The Last King of Scotland (fascinating historical study)
One Hour Photo (tragically underrated film-- this movie is really good-- is no one paying attention?)
Dagon (little known creepy horror flick from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft)
In Bruges (interesting movie that is hard to categorize)

I'll rate the one's you've listed that I've seen, five stars is max:

**** 28 Days Later (pretty darned good, as is 28 Weeks Later)
*** About Schmidt (started off great, but choked midway)
* Napolean Dynamite (ugh)
*** Open Range (one of the best recent Westerns, but that's not saying much)
***** Dawn of the Dead remake (greatest horror movie ever)
*** Children of Men (riveting)
*** One Hour Photo (some of Robin William's best acting. story was lacking)

Not a bad list, overall.

In addition, here are a few more of the best:
***** Broken Flowers
***** The Pledge
**** Godzilla 2000 (if you like Godzilla, this is the first of the "millennium" movies, actually released in 1999, but not in the US until 2000)
**** Star Wars - Clone Wars (this was better than most of the new 'real' Star Wars movies)
**** From Hell
**** Ghost Dog
**** Lost in Translation (probably too slow for most moviegoers, but I really liked it)
**** Letters from Iwo Jima
**** Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (visually stunning)
**** Lord of the Rings (all three of them)

Bob W.

I'll rate the ones I've seen from your list:

*The Pledge (ouch....just bad)
*Godzilla 2000 (saw part of it...and it was bad)
***From Hell (very entertaining and underrated flick, could be in my top 30 of the 21st century)
***Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (very enjoyable)
****1/2 LOTR Trilogy (all around excellent, especially the last one)

Just a "short" list of some I liked.

A lot of good movies. Gotta love The Lord of the Rings trilogy for doing it right (except that Sam was just a little over the top and I'll blame Tolkien for that).

After that, just about anything with Jason Statham in it: Crank, the Transporter series, The Bank Job, Revolver, Chaos, Snatch, etc.

The ones that come to mind:

LOTR
Eastern Promises
O Brother Where Art Thou
Sin City (never thought they could pull off the movie)
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
The Prestige (anything w/ Nikola Tesla is cool)
Memento
A Scanner Darkly

I'll throw in Cold Mountain, because it has enough chick flick and historical elements to make myself and my wife content at the same time (although nowhere near a best if I go strictly by my opinion)

I'll also throw in Band of Brothers, although it's not a movie, it's some of the best film making I've ever seen.
