Strategy wise has to be austrailia but south America has always been my sentimental favorite. Aus just gives way too many advantges to not start out there. Hope it helps!

North America is the easiest to hold with only three borders and a payout of five (unless they changed the rules in the last 20 years). Asia is probably the worst to shoot for, unless you are playing grade schoolers, you just have too many borders to support for the payout of seven.
Africa is a pretty good gambit, but you have to aggressively kill the weak to get their cards to help in the payout so you can compete against Europe or NA.
For an advanced board game of conquest look into Twilight Imperium. The game is never the same twice and is several levels more complex than basic old Risk.
