Blues' thread about grail knives got me thinking. As knifenuts we're always daydreaming about that next knife, but what about those knives that we already have? Which knives that you already own are your favorites? Why are those knives your favorites? To make it interesting let's do both fixed and folding blades.

I'll start. While these two are my favorite knives, they are not the most valued. My most treasured knives have sentimental value. On the other hand these two knives I just marvel over. I love examining the craftsmanship that went into these two fine examples of the cutler's art and I enjoy just holding them in my hands.

The first is a Hiroaki Ohta "Jess Horn" style knife. The moment I laid eyes on this I had to have it.

This second knife I picked up just a couple of days ago, but it has quickly assumed a place of honor in the collection. Every knifenut should at least once in their life experience working with a custom knifemaker to create such a lovely piece of steel. It's incredible how Ray listened to my ideas and came up with a knife that was even better than what I imagined.

Good topic, Kama'. These days, I'm trying to stay focused on what I have, rather than what I want (and want, and want ).

It's difficult to choose a single favorite, but when it comes to traditional patterns, this century-old (give or take a decade or two) NYKC "Stabber" jack epitomizes a bygone era for me. The design is so wonderfully quaint and anachronistic.

My favorite fixed-blade is one big "knife" - a ~350 year-old mumei Shinto katana:

Very nice knife and sword, I can see why they are your favorites. Wonderful pictures too.

Fixed blade:

Because good puukko is awesome utility and bushcraft utility.

Slipjoint:

Or Victorinox Pioneer / Scout Pattern generally
I find humble scout pattern or similar knives very useful and handy. I wish to get Case / Queen / Tidoute's scout sometimes. Nice slicer blade with excellent range of other handy utilities in compact and light package.

Here are my fav two at this time. 1) Bark River Bravo 1 Ghost Green Jade G-10 w/ Black Liners. This thing is one manly knife. 2) 2009 Cripple Creek Punkin' Seed Jack. It just rides great and looks cool.

Favorite slipjoint is easy...can't beat a family heirloom knife, this one is a Remington R3153 made between 1921-24.

Fixed blade is a bit tougher. It use to be a simple Sid Birt drop point but I gifted that one to my nephew years ago. I think i will have to go with a Marbles Expert I rescued and re-handled with cholla few years back.

My favorite Traditional Folder is this Case CV 4 1/8" Trapper with Yellow Derlin Handles.

My favorite Fixed Blade is this very early, original, Rigid Caribou Skinner. I bought this knife in 1970.

Funny that my two favorite PATTERNS for a folder are the Barlow Knife and Jack Knife both of which I have quite a few but my FAVORITE folder that I have is the Trapper pictured above.

I have other knives that I am VERY partial to but if I had to give all of my knives up but two, those pictured above are the two I'd keep.

This is a very hard choice to make. I have so many and eveyone I buy is my favorite. I like knives that I can carry so here are two I can and do carry quite often:

Eldon Talley City Knife, 5 3/4" OAL (This one is new)

Joel Chamblin Wharncliffe Trapper, 3 1/4" Closed

I like many of the knives by GEC and S&M among factory folders, and I have several of the fixed blade knives by Hen & Rooster in 440C and ram's horn.

But for favorites, I've gotta go custom.

John Howser bullet lockback in stainless damascus and genuine stag. Locks up like Fort Knox.

Tobin Smith half guard hunter/skinner in 1095 and ironwood. Nice hamon, razor sharp.

At this moment in the spinning of the earth, I really like this one particular Buck 303 Stockman, because it has really pretty plastic, gives fake pearl a good name. And my favorite fixed blade is the Buck 121, discontinued. Just because it cuts like I want a fixed blade to cut. I use a couple in the kitchen and all four fo butchering if I am lucky.

It would be hard to really say which one is my absolute favorite, since that may change depending on the day. And although I have some antique slipjoints (like that beautiful NYKC above), I am only considering modern production for this thread. If push comes to shove, this would probably be my favorite fixed blade:

I cannot say which is my favorite!!

"I'm such a knife slut"
"If you can't be with the one you love; love the one you're with"
So what ever is in my pocket!!!

Fixed blade, Graham brothers pocket kukri
Folder, case trapper in blue jigged bone or my latest a canal street trapper in sambar stag can't decide

sorry no pics

I have many favorites; some are more glamorous than these, but when I need to cut something (but not in the kitchen), these are my tools (usually).

My Favorites??? let's see >>> I just ordered a Case/Bose Dog Leg Jack !! I think that will be one of them, but right know I have a Keith Johnson Sod Buster, It's a cutter and also in my pocket is a Case stag/ Sway Back Jack, that I put a hand rubbed finish on, It's pretty good to. Waiting on a Menefee Back Pocket and then all my pockets will be full. There is nothing better than a pocketful of cutters!!

My favorites:

A.G. Russell Scout - I love this knife because it's the quintessential roadtrip buddy. Blade for smearing squeeze cheese on crackers, cap lifter for liberating Fat Tire beers, awl for reworking the old belt when the first two tools get overused.

Walt Campbell- This fixed blade represents a lot of "firsts" for me. Its the first custom knife I ever bought. I got it on our first trip to Alaska in '98. The next day I hung it on my belt as my wife and I took our first real hike together (10 miles). I rolled an ankle and tumbled down a scree field much to my wife's horror. I ended up soaking my ankle in a crystal clear, ice cold stream with trout moving through it. We ate lunch and took a nap right on the banks, then walked back. Absolute magic.

That QCCC teardrop looks great. The pattern is one of my favs. Is that in ebony?

Hi Rick. Great blades, both of them.If you don't mind me asking, the handle on the Katana like all others is held on with a removable pin.Looks like bamboo. I have always wondered how rigid the handles are to the blade tangs?Have you ever taken it apart to look at the stamp?
