I am beginning to really like synthetic socks (the moisture-wicking kind). I use them with wool socks for my boots and by them selves for my running shoes.

My one complaint is that they seem to wear out fast. What are good brands to look for to get some good long lasting socks?

Mine don't seem to last that long either. I run thru the Smartwools real fast, although tey're not synthetics. The various Patagonias seem to work best for me, and last longest. They don't stink too bad either.
Haglofs in Sweden makes some that look like they might be excellent and I hope to try a pair soon.

I use various Thorlo sock models in crew- and over-the-calf lengths. Seem to last a LONG time. Most of my wear is day to day civilian wear, but there are some pairs in my EDW (every day wear) rotation that must be over eight years old, have no holes, and are still doing the job. I haven't tried their military boot sock yet, but it does look interesting as a heavier hiking sock.

I usually get mine from http://www.sockco.com/ who also carry the Smartwool items.

While not exactly in line with your question, the following might be helpful:

I've never tried it, but a lot of guys I know wear knee-high nylons on our hunting trips. (No, it's not considered cross-dressing!) They serve to wick moisture and to keep in a little more heat. They are always worn under other socks so they don't wear out as quickly, and that way nobody knows that you're wearing nylons!

So it's a little unorthodox, but it's cheap and effective.
