Having been looking at adding some tools to my collection lately, I came across alot of pretty good looking big knives/camp knives and I'd like to know what one/ones you guys use.

My take on the 'camp' knife is a bigger, thicker blade that can cut away at those annoying little tree sprouts and brambles at camp, and one that can baton and chop fire wood while leaving your the delciate woodcrafts and food duties to a smaller, thinner knifes.

So what camp knife do you favour/use and why? :)

I use either the Cold steel bushman or the British MOD survival knife as they are both tough and sharp. The cold steel being particularly practical in brmabley woodland as it can take a large shaft up the handle (:D) and be used like a scythe/machete, while still being tough enough to baton logs. The MOD knife is just a thick ol' beast, being 1/4" (6cm+) and makes easy work of batoning really fat fire wood. With a little clean up of the factory edge profile it can shave hairs and chop pretty well for a short knife.

I've shrink tubed my handle and fitted a ferro rod in the ahndle too :)

With this one I just sanded off the black blade coating (I can oil carbon blades..) and shrinked tubed the handle.

I'd like to collect a few more, and I have no particular interest in tactical anything so if you have any info on tradtional styled ones that would be great!

cheers

Just wanted to comment on the CS Bushman real quick. I saw some pics of Cobalt beating the crap out of his on one of his posts and it made me want to give one a try. I have been beating the living hell out of it and it just begs for more. Takes a great edge. Surprisingly versatile blade. Handle is slick but I just threw some tape on it and it's good to go. Think is was around $25, an amazing value. To anyone who hasn't tried one out, I highly recommend it.

I completely agree, for the price it is an incredibley tough and useful knife! The sk5 spring steel makes it flex back into shape when spearing/abusing and take a hair popping edge with ease, I really like it.

The hollow handle makes it capable of so much more than just knifey stuff, mine lives as a spear in my closet for home defense when I'm not playing in the mud :D

Bark River Bravo 1 - stout enough to split firewood, but with the convex edge it slices breakfast as good as any of my thinner blades.

anyone have any experience with the ka-bar adventure potbelly, bark river hudson bay and condor hudson bay? or any other improvised camp knives from butchers knvies etc?

I use my MISSION MPS ti (you can also get it in steel for those so inclined) a lot these days. Camp, skinner - what ever. Basically for alround use.

I've been thinking about getting one of those Bushman knives.
How did you fix the fire steel in the handle, it seems like a fairly wide compartment?

the firesteel has a wide plastic finger grip that just fits in with a little force, obviously you could make a better fitted holder with a rubber seal for the best fit.

I wasn't sure how well the bushy would hold up when being speared into stuff and left to hang, but the blade flexes loads and goes back into place after. The CS destruction/demonstration video is unusual but pretty explanitroy of the breaking points of then blade and it is extremely flexible.

Ahh okay. Thanks. Sounds like the same fire steel, that I have; wide plastic grip with dimples for the fingers. I didnt realize, that it would stick in the Bushman handle. Good to know.

I dont know, If I would trust the Bushman for being made into a spear either. I would prefer a CS Boar Spear, but that is of course a different concept.

Maybe if a hole was drilled through the Bushman handle and cross piece/pin could be inserted to make sure, that shaft and Bushman would stick together.

Yes, Id hate to see a hog run off with the knife/spear too, LOL.
In fact, I would prefer NOT to throw a small spear at a hog, but hang on to it and stick the pig.

I stick pigs with a knife and that works fine.

The handle does have a hole like that, I use a screw to make sure my pole doesn't come lose, and I took the screw out yesterday to have a play with the knife and I had to hammer it out as it was jammed in like a bugger!

Good, that it has the drilled hole.
It might work in a pinch.

Her is my preferred hog medicine:D:

Condor Hudson Bay is a fine beater around home and camp. Mine has the coating still, thought about taking it off with stripper, but wear will do that for me.

My Bravo-1 is my main camp knife. If I need bigger I use my Junglas.

My fav's in order of cost.

Bark River (A2 Bravo 1 for me)
Esee (Esee 3, Esee 4, Esee 5 for me)
Himalayan Imports (Ugly Villager for me)
Ontario (SP10, Rats, Machete, Abaniko for me)
Ka-Bar Becker Series (BK14, BK17, BK2 and BK9 for me)
Cold Steel (Hawks, Bushman, True Flight)
Mora (Robust, Companion)

I usually just pick 2 of the Beckers and go :)

Got lots of knives but my favorite camp knives are Esee 3 and Fallkniven S1. Just got an Izula for christmas, love it so much that lately it always tags along...
