Favourite Handle Material?

Just wondering what were forumite's opinions on handle materials, if they have a favourite and why, etc.

I think I prefer wood just slightly. It is a little grippier, has a "warmer" feel to it, and I like the appearence.

Still, the horn is beautiful and still feels pretty good in the hand.

Any other opinions?

Thanks,

Clay

I've heard of two things that interest me.
One is stabilized Ivory. That sounds way too expensive.

The other I've heard of but know little about is suppossed to be a powdered natural material bound together (plasticized) and maybe compressed that is basically a composite of real ivory. Kind of like those sawdust logs sold for fireplaces. Anybody know more about these? I don't want to put work into fitting a plastic handle, but if these are maybe cheap enough and look real?

I have Rosewood and Oak on my HI's and prefer Oak as its texture is more secure. I have handled one with deer horn and it felt better than Rosewood but not as nice as the Oak. If I could magically put a handle on, I would go with a synthetic like G10 for durability and cut grooves in it for security.

Bill,

Is sandalwood what is on the 15" AK's in your brochure (a lighter, tan wood)?

What types of wood are usually used in khukuri handles?

Thanks!

Hi Clay:

We have never received any sandalwood handles and the ones that were shipped recently may be lost -- but I am still hoping customs might be sitting on the parcel.

I am not good at wood ID but we get Nepali oak, rosewood, and the Hanuman handles look sort of like black walnut. They have trees in Nepal that do not grow here, like the peeple tree which makes ID even more difficult for me. Some of our handles might even be rhododendron (sp?).

Thanks, Uncle!

Hopefully, the sandalwood khuks will show soon. I am anxious to see pix of them.

Thanks again,
Clay

I perfer the horn.It is the only choice for straight razors, which I pamper myself with.

My favorite is the spotted deer horn but it doesn't grow to a size that will handle larger khukuris and it is very difficult to come by. Buffalo horn is my next favorite but sandalwood is a very close second.

Please note this is a personal preference only. I have some customers who will buy only wood handles.
