Hello BF,
I always seemed to favour sabre grip. Which is why jimping was so important to me. However, I recently tried hammer grip and have enjoyed it - especially on knives that lack jimping. It also depends on the ergos of the handles ofc too. What grips do you use, or prefer and in what situations? Just curious to hear from people who have a lot more experience with knives than me.

I hardly pay any attention to how I grip a knife. In my opinion that may be a good sign that a knife and it's handle are versatile. Just depends on what I am doing.
I mean I am a mechanic and use hand tools all day everyday. I use so many tools and grips I just naturally do what is best for the task.
I will say, not being a chef, that I (still) cannot comprehend the silly grip that most people use when preparing food. I am talking about that beloved and all too common index and thumb on the blade sides and smaller fingers around the handle leaving most of the handle hanging out there behind unused.
. . . I mean . . . ?
. . . . ?
talk about jimping or not. Talk about whether or not jimping is aggressive enough.
then how do they grip the knife ? ? ? on the slick sides of the blade. On a tapered surface that is tapered the wrong way for any hope of a grip on it.
From a knife modder's perspective I would think they would put a little texture there or some dimples or maybe just some lettering engraved in the surface for us logical thinkers that says "place fingers here" so we know that it is . . . in fact . . . against all appearances to the contrary . . . actually . . . a practical place to "??grip??" the knife.
Oh reeeaallllly ? Seriously ?
Whoda thought ?
OK I got it out. I feel a little better.
PS: I keep trying it but think it is King has no clothes.
