Hello Ladies and Gents,

First post as I haven't had much of a reason to before!

Just received a Trident S2 fixed blade yesterday and have spent all night admiring it! Its my first knife above the $100 mark and my first SOG (Pretty new to serious knives except a few KA-BARs). Its a bit heavier than what I'm used to, but well balanced. Love the handle too; never was a fan of scales or rubber types. Cuts like a razor as well, took off a bit more forearm hair than I had planned :\ Overall a very nice looking and feeling knife, impresses me enough to make me want to try a Bowie next :D

Now on to some questions I hope some can answer:

I've read a few posts about the Bowie, but there seems to be a lack of reviews about the Trident in the field. Im almost afraid to use it due to its clean look. Anyone else own/use the Trident S2 and have any comments for a new user?

What's the different between the Trident and the Trident II? On the SOG website the price difference is $155, with the original being more expensive.

Lastly, on a downward note: The only problem with this knife is that quick side-to-side motions cause something inside the handle to rattle slightly, which is odd because everything on it is extremely tight. Up and down and chopping motions dont cause this noise. I dont have the right tool to remove the pommel, and its too tight to remove by other means (guess they didnt want people messing up the perfect alignment of those washers :P) to see what exactly is causing the noise. Any thoughts?

Much thanks for any responses, its appreciated.

Johnny50,

Wow, lots of similarity to my own situation: The SOG Bowie (S1) was my first knife above $100, and my first SOG, but I didn't have any Kabars (I did have a Buck Special 119). It took a year or so to get some Kabars into my collection.

I see you've discovered how sharp these SOG's can be, same with me. I never knew how sharp a knife could be until the S1 started de-foresting my arm. I was amazed and aghast at the sharpness one could put onto a piece of steel.
As for using it: Do So !! Whenever I'm in the field my S1 goes with me. It is also one of my favorite pieces of Tactical Tableware.

The new Trident II has a blade thickness of a "mere" 0.240" whereas your S2 (and the S1 Bowie) have blade thickness = 0.280".

The SOG folks have spoiled me rotten on the concept of thick blades, and I've since gathered a Tigershark, Tech I, and Tech II into the collection, all with 1/4" thick blades. So I've become quite biased and prejudiced toward "thick." I also had a SEAL 2000 but a friend up north needed it badly.

Go for an S1 !! I'm not a Micarta handle kinda guy, I like the leather handle of the S1 (and Kabar's too).

CONGRATS on the S2 !!

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. rattling in the handle ?? perhaps a piece of loose flashing in there ?? Checking the curriculum of the Carl School Of Serious Knife Abuse, it says, "Whap the handle firmly on the table/workbench until the rattling stops, or until you get tired, or bored, or lose interest, or don't care about rattling anymore."

p.p.s. There's always warranty service from SOG, they'll take good care of you.

Thanks Hunter,

Hmmm, Tactical Tableware... Nice looking Tigershark, somehow it doesnt look out of place at all in that setting :P I'm sure this would raise a few eyebrows around the dinnertable come summer and the family get togethers. Lots of anti-knives outside of the kitchen people in the family, you see :o

I really am attracted to the thick blades as well, everything else I used to consider very solid just seems flimsy in comparison! As for the handle, its a very minor thing and isnt affecting the performance. I figure I can live with it unless it becomes a problem somehow.

As soon as I allot the funds, I think an Bowie is in order.

Thanks again!

Johnny50,

Tactical Tableware indeed. With a grilled 1-1/2 lb T-bone and most of a bottle of fabulous Galleano Cucamonga Peak Red for dinner this very evening, I can honestly say, "You are on the right track, young man, you're on the the right track."

As for the Tigershark, let's just say that last October the Tigershark raised not only many eyebrows but a few acres of concerns. Fortunately reality prevailed.... and since there are dozens of reasonable interpretations of "reality" in Kali, well..... but meanwhile, back 14 months ago:

Welcome to the wonderful world of thick SOG's. You're going to like it here.

Cheers,

Carl

Oh gosh...........here we go again.........
Pay no attention to the VERY large sharp knife placed on the edge of the plate, it is just for looks, it is a SOG, but he really uses small serrated kitchen knives to perform these task. (I hope !) :p

I just don't get it, Whats wrong with using a tigershark as a steak knife.
I used my tigershark as a steak knife just a few days ago ( much to the dismay of the steak, and the rest of my family:D).

Johnny50,
I was just thinking about your coment on how you can't bring yourself to use the trident, please remember this "A knife has no place in your heart , just in your hand":D:D

turns out Robbie is one of them backwoods fellas who doesn't use his knives.... he just takes 'em out of the safe once in a while, looks at 'em, does some polishing, then puts 'em back in the safe.

I hear tell he's even got a sign out front, "Criminals, rob me first, I don't use my knives even for self-defense."

Robbie ???

OK, I use about 3, 1 Hunter Revolver, 1 auto clip, and 1 gas station cheapie. :p

The rest stay all shined and locked up like NPH says. If I decide to look at them I put on my white gloves (socks) and my S.M.B. (saliva moisture barrier  ).

Ok, I'll admit it sounds a little weird, but I started out collecting knives 25 or so years ago and they were all older carbon steel knives and they would rust if you looked at them wrong.

Carl, you mis-read, it says, "Rob me first, Rob me last, signed, SIG p-226". ;)
