Still searching for "the" big family chopper. I've got a .310 FFBM and I like it, but it's a little bit much. Can some one in the know tell me how much thick last year's FBM SE was? How thick was this years? I like a blade heavy chopper and that's one thing that kept me from buying an LE, as I thought it was a bit neutral. I've tried several different flavors of FFBM's and FBMs. Haven't tried a standard FBM with mag scales, prefer the non corrugated blades. I wouldn't mind being talked into one, if someone in the know can convince me that the corrugations make it a better chopper.

The 2007 SE FBM was 0.270 inches thick with Magnum handles.:thumbup:

The 2007 SE is sabre ground. The 2008 SE is the same thickness with a full flat grind. It is probably the lightest factory FBM yet.

I have heard great things about the 2007 SE chopping ability but I haven't tried one.

If you don't like the CG's, the only other thing is the spear point prototype which is about 0.290" I think and $$$.

SE is the best chopper of the bunch IMO.

The corrugations doesn't make it any worse. I absolutely love my CG FBM

Here are the stats on the 2008 SE FBM...
  • The overall length is 16.25"
  • The blade length is 10"
  • The blade height is just over 2"
  • The blade thickness is 0.265" at the scales and tapers a bit to 0.255" along the length of the blade
  • The handle is 1" thick at the thickest point on the middle palm swell, they are magnum
  • The weight is 27.4 ounces

The balance point on the 2008 SE is at the choil so it is a bit forward weighted.

For me the FBMLE is the best chopper of all the standard offerings of FBMs straight from the factory. It is also the most beautiful!

The FBMSE07 are are awesome knives and are just a tad more hefty than the CGFBMs. I have never chopped with a FBMSE07 but I can't imagine it being a better chopper chop for chop than a FBMLE. However, I can see it having a advantage if fatigue comes into play.

I personally feel that the CGFBMs make slightly better overall users because they are a tad lighter. Put on a nice convex edge on one of those CGFBMs and they will become superb choppers that will put them right in the FBMLE territory.

Now the FFBMs... If you don't mind the weight...They are the best bang for the buck. Those are really hefty choppers than can kick some serious ash. Put a nice convex edge on one of those bad girls like JAB's convexed FFBM and they will even trump the FBMLE.

Well I was going to say something before seeing Ban's post:p

He's the man when it come's to these questions:thumbup:

Ahh... I will say I would get he LE hands down! The nicest Blade I have ever seen and felt. I have the 2007 SE as well, but the LE blow's it away in looks and feel. I didn't care for the FFBM, way to heavy, sold it day after I got it.

Never had a CG though, it Ban say's they'll chop they will, but the LE is a true thing of beauty.

I appreciate everyones input. I've got a FFBM that I may hold onto until I try an 07 or 08 SE, maybe a standard with mags. I've had a FFBM with standard scales and didn't like the way it felt, have tried the standard FBM with regular scales and didn't like it. Have held a prototype and a FBM LE and didn't think they were for me either. Like the FFBM, but would like to smooth out the scales a bit, if it wouldn't make them too slick. Fatigue and weight is a factor on the FFBM, at 6" and 225 some days I don't know if I'm man enough for the .310 magged FFBM. On those days I carry the BAD:D Bill, thanks for the specs on the 08 SE. Are the specs the same for the '07?
