After I chopped up a bunch of firewood and took down lots of blackberry brambles, I found I had chipped and rolled my blade...probably hit some rocks. So I decided to sharpen to a nice polished, convexed edge with just sandpaper. Also, I had previously sanded off all the ridges on the handles.

Here are some comparison photos...the user cleaned up really nicely. There is some dark patina on the blade from the blackberry bushes, but you can hardly see it in the photos. :)

Nice knives & pics! Thanks.

How do those smooth grips handle?

They both look great!

Your user cleaned up pretty nicely... did you buff it?

Thanks for sharing.

No, didn't buff it. There are actually lots of scratches on the finish...you can kind of see them in the second photo.

I love the feel of the smooth handles. Of course, I usually wear gloves, but when I don't, there are no sharp edges biting into my hand.

I didn't take any pictures of the chopping, but I'll try to remember next time. I was really pleased at how easily I could split wood or chop through 1-2" diameter sticks and brambles.

That is a Big and Beautiful user you got there

This edge is not quite a mirror polish because frankly, I got tired - the blade is HUGE! But it's good enough for me to do more chopping. If I'm diligent, I might put in more time to get it mirrored like the photo below.

Plus, somehow it was really hard to take good photos of the edge.

This is the only decent edge photo I've ever taken - a mirror polished, convexed edge on my GW.

My method is similar to what a lot of you use. Stropped on 320 grit, 600 grit, 1500 grit sandpaper backed by a FIRM mousepad (not the soft, squishy ones) then final stropping on leather with green compound, then bare leather.

As far as the handle, I used 120 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. Everything was done by hand.

Just curious as to where you picked up the sand paper. I checked the local hardware store (and Lowes for that mattter) and they did not carry sandpaper that fine.

Thanks for the help.
