Fear of Flying?

Until recently all I had to play with were some CCC's, and a Jag. Thanks to Tique & the Exchange forum, I've got a PC Int'l 259 to play with (my first with the happy little butterfly logo - I've been grinning for a week!). Being a heavier knife, it's a lot slower than my POS's.

Here's my problem: Since it's heavier, and slower, I haven't been able to complete the basic "toss & catch" type aerial. I thought to myself that a slower knife needs a higher toss to complete the rotation, but this hasn't been the case. Then I figured maybe more thumb pressure at the release of the toss. Also didn't work. No matter what I do, the safe handle "stalls" ...

Is there a trick to getting a heavier balisong to fly, or are they doomed to take the bus?

Danke,
Jon

'Scuse me while I flip this out ...

It would depend on the type of toss up.
The one that Clay calls the "static" toss is easy with any weight of balisong...it's just a matter of grip.
There is a palm toss where you lay the tang in the palm and have the latch area laying over the tips of the index and middle fingers. When you toss up,the butt of the handles go up first and open in the air, turining th knife inside out. This one is easier to do with long thin balisongs.Heavier blades don't do it as well since they really aren't suited for this type of action.
With any type of toss up or other move, you'll need to check the way you're gripping if you're having problems doing the move(s).Sometimes, this will solve the problem, other times you'll need to look at the move itself and look where the problems are and figure out what can be done to solve them.
Hope this helps

It wasn't me...It was my *good* twin..
My "inner puppy" made me do it..

whenever I just pick up my jag (and i'm used to a BM42) and I do a throw, I just throw a little harder. It cant really be explained, you just learn how to judge when to catch and how hard to throw

I think the trick is to spin it faster, don't throw it higher or harder, just spin it faster, it's kinda wierd to explain.

Thanks for the attempt guys, but I've tried all that. The problem with adjusting grip is that the bottom horn & handles don't slide off the knuckles straight, or the angle of thumb pressure changes, causing the knife to twist whilst airborne. The problem with increasing the speed of the rotation is that the angle of the thumb pressure changes, because of the slightly different muscles that get called into use ... I think I just answered my own question. Just practice with the heavier knife until the muscles in the thumb balance ... Hmm....
